June 13, 2025 - Mark Zonder calls Chroma Key's Dead Air For Radios "amazing"

Legendary drummer Mark Zonder recently praised Dead Air for Radios, which was the first studio album under Kevin Moore's musical moniker Chroma Key.

Zonder, the ex-drummer for progressive metal pioneers Fates Warning as well as the current drummer for the rock band A-Z, discussed his contributions to Chroma Key's 1998 album during an interview with Different Stages Radio.  The interview was in promotion of A-Z's sophomore album A2Z2, which was released through Metal Blade Records on June 6.

The outgoing percussionist mentioned Dead Air For Radios in response to a question asked by host J.J. Caithcart about music in the drummer's catalog that "maybe flew under the radar."

"A few things come to mind," Zonder said.  "Obviously, Chroma Key with Kevin Moore.  There might be eight songs on the record.  I played on five.  Three of them are like sound effects and noises, and Kevin going off into a whole different whatever he's doing.  But those five songs, I thought were amazing.  Certain ones have almost like a Steely Dan kinda of feel to them.  I got to just play and not necessarily be heavy, but be more artsy I guess you could say.  Really groove oriented, really linear sticking heavy.  That's a really good one."

Oct. 16, 2024 - New Dream Theater website includes detailed Moore bio

Dream Theater has unveiled a re-design of its official website that includes updated biographies of its past and present band members – including original keyboardist Kevin Moore.  The new website, which was created by the company Crystal Spotlight, was launched in conjunction with the progressive metal band's new single "Night Terror," which is the first song to feature founding drummer Mike Portnoy since his departure from the band in 2010.  The single will appear on the band's forthcoming album, Parasomnia, which is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2025.

"We've been hard at work on a fresh new design for their website, which brings back the band's classic 'Majesty' logo in style, along with enhanced discography pages, updated band member pages, expanded photo and video libraries, and much more," Crystal Spotlight wrote in a social media post.  "It has been an absolute honour to be a part of this very special next chapter with Dream Theater."

Moore's four-paragraph biography covers everything from his early days in Dream Theater to his more recent work in the progressive metal supergroup OSI that features Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos.

"Throughout his career, Kevin Moore has maintained a unique presence in the music world, combining rock, ambient, and experimental sounds to create music that defies easy categorization," the biography reads.  "While his tenure with Dream Theater is perhaps his most well-known period, his later works with Chroma Key and OSI demonstrate his willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic landscapes.  Moore’s music remains influential in both the progressive rock and electronic music scenes, known for its subtle complexity and emotional depth."

Aug. 9, 2024 - Mike Portnoy credits Moore for "famous" drum intro on DT's "6:00"

Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy has given credit to Kevin Moore for his drum intro on the song, "6:00," which he called "one of probably my most famous drum parts."  The drummer discussed the topic during a "song breakdown" video on Drumeo, which is an online platform that offers an organized drum curriculum and artist courses on popular topics.

The song, "6:00," which features lyrics by Moore, is the opening track on Dream Theater's 1994 album, Awake, which was the band's final album to include the keyboardist.

"Here's the craziest thing about this drum intro and the drum pattern," Portnoy said.  "I gotta give Kevin Moore the credit, because '6:00' was a song that Kevin Moore brought in.  He demoed it on his own.  It was in a very, very primitive form.  And he had a drum machine.  So, it was just a drum loop going: 'Do do, gat.  Do, gat gat.  Do do, gat.  Do, gat, gat."  But, of course, I sprinkled it with all kinds of hi-hat and splash embellishments, and doing different things with the splashes and the china, so I'll take credit for all that stuff.  But the reality is it was based off of a drum loop that Kev had."

Dec. 12, 2023 - Mike Portnoy praises Moore in "album study" video for WDADU

Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has shared his thoughts on keyboardist Kevin Moore and his contributions to the band's 1989 debut album, When Dream and Day Unite.  The outgoing Portnoy appeared today as a special guest on "In the Prog Seat," which is an "album study" video series featuring crew members of the progressive music website Sea of Tranquility.  In the video, the drummer discussed everything from Moore's lyrics on the band's debut album to his various music projects since leaving the band in 1994.

"Kevin was not one of those kind of old-school retro keyboard players," Portnoy said in response to a tongue-in-cheek question about the debut album's lack of Mellotron.  "He didn't have a Mellotron.  He didn't have a Hammond.  He was more about synth pads and piano.  His keyboard influences were guys like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, but not necessarily the Mellotron sounds.  He was into like modern Rush, believe it or not.  We were really into the Power Windows album when it came out, and he was was very into Queensrÿche in terms of the way they used keyboards like on Rage For Order and stuff like that.  But Kevin was never a retro analog sound keyboard kind of, Neal Morse, Ryo Okumoto, kind of guy."

Portnoy continued, "He was obviously a great keyboard player, but I think his strengths were in his composition.  The music that we wrote together and his lyrics, like it's already been mentioned, the lyrics to 'Only a Matter of Time' are some of my favorite lyrics written by anybody ever, anywhere.  So I think those were his strengths.  I don't think he cared so much about the proggy virtuoso.  That wasn't his thing.  He was more of an artist type guy.  He was way more about the artistry than he was about the flashy playing."

Regarding whether he has any contact today with Moore, Portnoy said: "No... I think he just really became disinterested in the spotlight, and that's why he left at the height of our blowing up off of Images and Words and Awake.  The ball was rolling and at its busiest, and we had been waiting for years and years to get to that point, and he left the band.  I think that's pretty telling of his personality.  He doesn't really care about the fame and success.  He's just an artist who wants to make music on his own.  God bless him.  He's an incredibly talented person."

March 15, 2023 - DT's "Pull Me Under" among 100 All-Time Greatest Heavy Metal Songs

Dream Theater's 1992 hit single, "Pull Me Under," has been ranked at #91 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time."  The 8:11 song, which features lyrics written by Kevin Moore, is widely considered to be the band's biggest hit and was the debut single from the group's 1992 breakthrough album, Images and Words.  It also peaked at #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart and received regular rotation on MTV.

To compile the list, the monthly magazine said it "gathered a group of headbangers," which included writers and critics who have contributed to the publication for decades, to debate the merits of more than 300 worthy songs over several months.

"In the wake of Eighties trailblazers like Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, Dream Theater became the leaders of American progressive metal in the Nineties.  A year after Nirvana released 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' with all its crudely simple guitar riffs, Dream Theater held fast to the showy technicality of prog rock, improbably earning a hit with the dizzying showmanship of their debut single, 'Pull Me Under.'  A slickly arranged epic built around Mike Portnoy's massive-sounding drums and guitarist John Petrucci's muscular-yet-intricate riffs and Yngwie Malmsteen-esque flourishes, the track effortlessly shifts from movement to movement, echoing Yes from two decades earlier.  Singer James LaBrie passionately belts out verbose, philosophical lyrics inspired by [William] Shakespeare's 'Hamlet,' keeping this seemingly arch composition accessible for eight exciting minutes."

July 11, 2022 - LaBrie talks 30th anniversary of I&W and shares story about Moore

Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie recently reflected on the band's 1992 breakthrough album Images and Words – and in the process shared a story involving the band's original keyboardist Kevin Moore.  LaBrie discussed the band's sophomore record with Peter Orullian, who is the host of a hard rock and heavy metal interview show titled Breaking Absolutes, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.  The Images and Words album, which is the band's most commercially successful studio release, was also the first to feature vocals by LaBrie.

In the interview, Orullian asked LaBrie about the closing track, "Learning to Live," and whether the "high F#" halfway through the song was written that way prior to him joining or whether the singer himself added it.

"I was totally written that way," LaBrie said in the interview.  "It was funny because the first time I sang that song we recorded a demo, and the first little demo we did was on a 4-track or an 8-track recorder.  John Myung had this condo he was sharing with a roommate, and I still remember he had this spare bedroom where I was sleeping a couple nights, and that's where we went in and recorded.  We had it all set up.  Mike [Portnoy] was recording me... So we get to that part that you're talking about with the F#, and I do it, sang it, and I finish.  And all of a sudden, the freaking bedroom door comes swinging open and Kevin Moore came running in going, 'What the fuck!  Oh, my God!  That's exactly what we were talking about!  Holy shit, dude!'"

June 11, 2022 - Moore among the contributors to upcoming book on Fates Warning

Kevin Moore is among those who shared their thoughts on the history of progressive metal pioneers Fates Warning in the upcoming book, "Destination Onward – The Story of Fates Warning."  The 400-page book, which was authored by longtime fan Jeff Wagner, was created with the cooperation of "every single member of Fates Warning, past and present, along with those at the record labels who supported them, peer musicians, members of the road crew, and a variety of others with the Fates sphere," according to the book's official website.  It will be released on July 15.

"I did interview [Moore] via e-mail; it was probably the shortest interview," Wagner said in a video interview with Heavy Metallurgy.  "He's got a whole other career right now.  And, of course, my gateway to him was Jim [Matheos].  But he was nice enough to answer some questions.  And I worship that guy.  OSI and Chroma Key, I'm a huge fan of both of those things."

The book is described as being an "honest appraisal of the many ups and downs through the band's 40-year history" and is complete with 232 images and 53 footnotes, according to its website.  It is available for purchase at http://fateswarningbook.com.

April 5, 2022 - Terry Brown says having Moore on FW's APSOG was "special"

Legendary producer Terry Brown recently reflected on his work with Fates Warning on their 1997 masterpiece, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, which this month is celebrating its 25th anniversary.  The concept record, which featured guest keyboards by Kevin Moore, was the eighth studio album by the progressive metal pioneers and consisted of one song divided into 12 parts.  It is also noted by many fans for its darker and more progressive style.

Brown, who is perhaps best known for his work with the Canadian rock band Rush, was responsible for the mixing, production and recording of A Pleasant Shade of Gray.  He had previously worked with Fates Warning on their Parallels album in 1991.

"So where do we begin, and what else can we say?" Brown said in an interview with Sonic Perspectives.  "A very dark and brooding album from Jim Matheos that was quite a challenge to make.  Recorded at the Carriage House in Connecticut, which was a great residential studio, we put lots of time into this, not least of all with Mark Zonder's complex set up and execution of the kit and samples.  We were all very focused on sounds and performance and having Kevin Moore as guest on keyboards was special."

Aug. 18, 2021 - Matheos on Moore: "I've always loved his sounds"

Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos praised the playing of Kevin Moore in an interview promoting Tuesday the Sky's new album, The Blurred Horizon, with the music website Sonic Perspectives.  The album will be released by Metal Blade Records on Sept. 3.

In the interview, Matheos was asked if working with the keyboardist pushed him a direction that resulted in the "vibe" of Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray and Disconnected albums in 1997 and 2000, respectively.  Moore appears as a keyboardist on both records.

"Certainly more with OSI than 'A Pleasant Shade of Gray' or 'Disconnected,'" Matheos said.  "But no, not really.  He definitely had his stamp on those records, but he played what I had written for the demos.  I had a guitar synth at that time, so I'd do a lot of demos using that, and his job was to come in and basically humanize those parts, play them as a keyboardist, rather than as a guitar player.  I've always loved his sounds.  And he'd come up with the great sounds and invert things, find different ways to make the parts sound more like they were written by a keyboard player.  He did bring a lot of input, especially on 'A Pleasant Shade of Gray.'  A lot of those parts weren't there when on my original demo.  So he definitely brought his own input to it, but I wouldn't say it influence me until we got to OSI.  In that case, we started doing a lot of recording digitally together, and it really opened up a lot of possibilities for me, what was available to do technologically.  And like I said, starting to experiment a little bit with keys and different software.

Oct. 30, 2020 - Moore named 64th greatest prog musician of all-time

Kevin Moore was named as the 64h greatest prog musician of all-time as part of a reader poll published in Prog magazine's October issue.  The poll received nearly 80,000 votes and was the "biggest reader vote" the magazine has ever undertaken, according to Prog editor Jerry Ewing.

"The original keyboardist in prog metal pioneers Dream Theater, Moore played on their first three studio albums but left before the tour for 1994's Awake,": the magazine wrote of Moore.  "Since his departure, Moore has explored electronica with his Chroma Key project and returned to prog metal, forming OSI alongside Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos."

Moore's former Dream Theater bandmates John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy also made the list at numbers 30, 10 and 8, respectively, while the band's subsequent keyboardists Derek Sherinian and Jordan Rudess ranked at numbers 57 and 22, respectively.

Sept. 8, 2020 - Dream Theater's John Petrucci talks early jam sessions with Moore

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci recently discussed his favorite riffs, as well as his jam sessions with the band's original keyboardist Kevin Moore, in a video for the online music magazine Loudwire.  Petrucci shared the details in promotion of his new solo album, Terminal Velocity, which was released on Aug. 28.  The album also features Dream Theater's founding drummer Mike Portnoy.

In the video, Petrucci said he and Moore jammed on songs by artists ranging from Neil Young to The Doors as teenagers prior to the formation of Dream Theater.

"The first riff I ever learned was actually from [Neil Young's] 'Hey Hey, My My,'" Petrucci said in the "Gear Factor" video.  "I had gone over to Kevin Moore's house.  Kevin Moore was the original keyboard player in Dream Theater.  We were best friends growing up on Long Island.  He lived right around the corner.  He was having a jam session and they needed somebody to play the guitar line.  I don't remember who taught it to me.  I learned it.  I was struggling, and I couldn't play it.  But it was the first thing I learned."

Petrucci and Moore appeared together on Dream Theater's first three studio albums: When Dream and Day Unite (1988), Images and Words (1992) and Awake (1994).  Moore ultimately left the band in 1994.

Aug. 11, 2020 - Dream Theater bassist John Myung talks band's early days with Moore

Dream Theater bassist John Myung recently discussed the band's early days, including playing with Kevin Moore, during a podcast interview for Ernie Ball.  In the interview, Myung talked about everything from attending Berklee College of Music with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy, tips for practicing bass, and the formation and early work ethic of Dream Theater.

The interview was conducted on the "Striking a Chord" podcast and was intended to promote Myung's new six-string bass through the Ernie Ball Music Man Artist Series.

"We kind of had a base of a band back on Long Island with Kevin Moore, who played keyboards," Myung said.  "He went to a different college of music, he went to  Fredonia School of Music... It was just implied that he was part of the team, and that he was the keyboard player.  The only thing that was not really decided was the vocalist aspect of the band.  We were with a few different vocalists before James LaBrie."

Moore, who was the founding keyboardist for Dream Theater, ultimately left the band just prior to the release of the band's third studio album, Awake, in 1994.  He was replaced by Derek Sherinian, who was later replaced by the band's current keyboardist Jordan Rudess.

The video footage for "Landslide," which runs for 3:59, appears to be taken from a moving train and was created using the software Cathodemer.

"Here's the final video for 'Landslide,' which I've uploaded to YouTube," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "The fist half is modified a bit - thanks for all the great feedback.  The YouTube video is unlisted right now now, so the only people who see it will be those who get the link from you guys.  Feel free to post it on social media or anywhere you like.  I will be announcing it on my Facebook page in the next couple days."

The idea, Moore said, is to create simple videos for all of the Chroma Key demos so that YouTube viewers "have something more to look at than just the song title."  He has previously posted videos for seven new Chroma Key demo songs using just the song title and a static image.

Sept. 8, 2019 - Moore shares 18th CK demo, "Nobody Said Anything," on Patreon

Kevin Moore has posted a new 3:45 demo song, titled "Nobody Said Anything," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.

"Here is the final (still instrumental!) version of the new demo, 'Nobody Said Anything,' formerly known as 'Streep,'" Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "This song started as a few different guitar riffs I played on an acoustic and recorded on my phone, then recorded and arranged in Ableton.  I made a lot of changes to the mix and mastering since the preview version.  Most notably: drums up, piano up, extended intro, modified outro.  Hope you like it!"

The tune is available in MP3, FLAC and M4A (Apple Lossless) formats with lyrics and patron names embedded in the files.  In addition, Moore said he is still planning to release a bonus track for Chroma Key Enablers ($5 pledgers), and multitrack stems and production notes for Chroma Key Collaborators ($10 pledgers).

Kevin Moore has posted a new 3:31 demo song, titled "War Comes Home," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.

"I finally managed to finish the vocals on this track (formerly 'Cold,' now 'War Comes Home'), finalized the mix, and tagged all the audio files,'" Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "Thank you for you patience - I hope you like the final result.  This song started out with just a Rhodes piano sound (you can hear in the intro) and a programmed beat, and became more monstrous as time went on."

Aug. 15, 2019 - John Petrucci discusses Moore in "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?"

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci discussed his childhood friendship with Kevin Moore in a recent segment of Loudwire's "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?"  In the segment, Petrucci talked about how he and Moore were inseparable in their younger years and his emotions when the keyboardist shared his decision to leave the band prior to the release of their 1994 album, Awake.

"He was my best friend growing up," Petrucci said of oore.  "Every guy probably has a friend that they just do everything with together.  We literally did everything together.  Our families were friends.  We lived right around the corner from each other.  Every day we were just hanging out, playing music, doing everything.  Then obviously our band became successful, which was the dream we both had.  We were touring.  We had everything going for us.  We were doing the Awake recording and he was like, 'Yeah, I'm gonna leave.'  And I just was like devastated.  I was like, 'I don't understand.'  So, for me personally, it was very heartbreaking."

July 15, 2019 - Moore posts YouTube video for CK demo, "Strong"

Kevin Moore has posted a 5:06 video on YouTube for "Strong," which is one of 16 demo songs released so far through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign.  The demo was originally shared with fans in September 2017.  "I just posted one of the new Chroma Key demos 'Strong' (Nov 2017) on YouTube," Moore said in a post on Facebook.  "You can download all the new demos and support the return of Chroma Key at patreon.com/chromakey.  Thanks!"

Moore previously stated that the song features guitar parts by Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos, who also appeared on the Chroma Key demo song, "Broke Antenna."

"This song ['Strong'] started as a synth riff I played on drum pads of the Maschine. (I didn’t know what notes I was playing, which was kind of liberating.)," Moore previously said.  "I performed the drums on the drum pads as well.  The intro riff and all the synths pads were played on the Diva synth.  The Rhodes is played on the Lounge Lizard.  All of the melody sections are also on the Lounge Lizard – they’re sounds based on electric piano, but tweaked into synth sounds.  The bass synth was played on Massive.  There is much more synth layering going on in this song than I’ve ever done before.  Somehow the sounds all fit in their own space."  He also added, "There are a couple more samples from my brother’s 'ecstatic dance' gatherings thrown in there in the beginning."

The other Chroma Key demos that can be heard on YouTube are "Mission," "4-Track," "Bonewalk," "Broke Antenna" and "Somewhere Better."  Those videos came after the keyboardist polled his Patreon patrons about making the demo releases available to stream online to help promote the new music, with an overwhelming majority of the voters in support of the idea.

"Here is the final, tagged version of 'Fader,'" Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I ended up making a lot of changes to the mix.  Aside from just sounding better overall (clearer highs, less muddy, more controlled bass) you will notice that the drums are louder and have more variation, and (spoiler alert) there is a menacing synth bass line that comes in towards the end.  I also spent more time getting the loudness and EQ right in mastering."

April 11, 2019 - Avandra frontman discusses Moore's work on "Derelict Minds"

Avandra vocalist/guitarist Christian Ayala talked about Kevin Moore's contribution to the band's new album in an interview with the website Prog Zombie.  Ayala, who is the founder of the Puerto Rico-based progressive metal band, discussed Moore's solo in "Derelict Minds," which is the seventh track from the band's forthcoming album, Descender.  The album will be released through Blood Music on April 26.

"I feel his solo adds a lot of depth and feel to the part where he plays it," Ayala said.  "Makes it more interesting.  Kevin has a good ear (obviously) for where to phrase what and what sound to use when doing so, and he did not disappoint.  Working with him was quite easy.  We emailed each other a couple times.  He nailed it on the first try, so there wasn't too much back and forth between us in that respect.  All in all, everything flowed well."

Ayala also shared how Moore's music has inspired him through the years.

"To say I'm a fan of Kevin's is an understatement, to be honest," Ayala said.  "He has shaped my musical creativity in a way that few others have.  As mainly a guitar player, one would think that [John] Petrucci had the biggest influence on me out of all the members of Dream Theater, but it was actually Kevin who inspired m the most.  He is what made Dream Theater the mystical experience I had when I was a young kid and first hearing the, at the age of 14, granted, the first album I ever listened to from them was Falling Into Infinity, but it wasn't until I heard Images and Words that I would never be the same again.  After I learned of his departure (he had already done so like five years before I had my first DT experience), I kept up with is work.  Even though I like OSI, Chroma Key was what continued the KM experience for me, especially Dead Air For Radios and You Go Now.  It was like hearing the ambiance and emotion I loved about Dream Theater, but stripped from its cumbersome technical approaches."

Other guest musicians on Avandra's Descender album are Richard Henshall of Haken and Daniel Schwartz of Astronoid, who also mixed the album. Avandra's other band members are Adrián Arroyo on drums, Luis Javier Rivera on guitars, and Gabriel Alejandro Rodriguez on bass.

March 3, 2019 - Moore guests on new song by Puerto Rican proggers Avandra

Kevin Moore has made a guest appearance on a new song by Puerto Rican progressive metal band Avandra.  The keyboardist appears on the 7:27 tune titled "Derelict Minds," which is the seventh track from the band's forthcoming album, Descender.  The album will be released through Blood Music on April 26.

"Derelict Minds is about fighting through the anxiety of a world so interconnected that one can feel completely adrift and alone, and reach that moment of individuation and understanding with oneself, calming the storm of thoughts and turning them into a calm sea," said the band's founder, guitarist, vocalist and synth player Christian Ayala Cruz in an announcement through Prog magazine.  "The album deals with a myriad of issues, though a central theme is language and its poietic (poiesis) power through concepts that can either realize potentials within each of us or oppress them."

Other guest musicians on the album are Richard Henshall of Haken and Daniel Schwartz of Astronoid, who also mixed the album. Avandra's other band members are Adrián Arroyo on drums, Luis Javier Rivera on guitars, and Gabriel Alejandro Rodriguez on bass.

Feb. 29, 2019 - Dream Theater's Petrucci discusses Moore's current career

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci recently discussed the current career of the band's original keyboardist Kevin Moore during an interview with Two Doods Reviews.  Moore left the band prior to the release of Dream Theater's third studio album, Awake, in 1994.

"Rumor has it that he's some sort of doctor or something, that he got into holistic medicine," Petrucci said in the interview.  "I have not talked to him in ages.  We actually grew up together.  We were best friends.  And after he left the band, he just went his own way.  Early on after the split, we kept in touch a bit, but I have not heard from him in a long time.  The only reason I know this is because some of high school friends and stuff stay in touch and our parents, we literally grew up together, our parents were friends."

Jan. 27, 2019 - Moore posts YouTube video for CK demo, "Somewhere Better"

Kevin Moore has posted a 4:03 video on YouTube for "Somewhere Better," which is one of 14 demo songs released so far through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign.  The demo was originally shared with fans in September 2017.

"Getting back on track uploading past demos to YouTube," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I just put 'Somewhere Better' up and added it to the playlist.  Please share!  And maybe even post a comment on YouTube..."

Moore previously said that the song is a "stretched out groove track that probably wouldn't have been out of place" on Chroma Key's 1998 album, Dead Air for Radios.

"I started messing around with recording guitar loops and riffs into Ableton Live," Moore previously said.  "I wanted to write something with a riff that just kept driving on, so it becomes kind of hypnotic (kind of like a Neu! track).  The main guitar part is just eighth notes on an A.  For the verses I added some Wurlitzer chord progressions to work a vocal melody over.  The washed-out synth pad that runs over the whole track is a Behringer DM12 polyphonic analogue synth."

The other Chroma Key demos that can be heard on YouTube are "Mission," "4-Track," "Bonewalk" and "Broke Antenna."  Those videos came after the keyboardist polled his Patreon patrons about making the demo releases available to stream online to help promote the new music, with an overwhelming majority of the voters in support of the idea.

"This one started out with some drum programming I did on my Ableton Push," Moore wrote.  "Then I started messing around with a Rhodes sound, trying to come up with chord progressions that are a little more unusual than what I usually write.  A lot of the synths were done on the Deepmind12 polyphonic analog synth."

March 13, 2018 - Moore shares ninth CK demo, "Elephant Boy" on Patreon

Kevin Moore has posted a new 3:49 demo song, titled "Elephant Boy," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  The keyboardist originally shared a preview version of the demo last month, but then decided to go back and add vocals "by popular demand," he wrote.

"Here's a version of Elephant Boy with vocals, as promised," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "This song started out as an acoustic guitar riff, and I recorded all the guitar on my Ovation electric acoustic.  But then I tried running the guitar track through an amp simulator and the results were really grungy, so I went with it.  I also played violin on this one (just bowed 16th notes on an E) and then varied the pitch throughout the song in Ableton."

Feb. 4, 2018 - Moore shares eighth CK demo, "Away," on Patreon

Kevin Moore has posted a new 3:29 demo song, titled "Away," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  The track comes nearly two months after Moore shared the demo song "Kings Park Youth," which was the first he has ever created solely using a guitar, he said.

"So this is my second guitar-based Patreon demo," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I performed it on my not-so-trusty Ovation 1867 Legend electric acoustic.  I recorded directly from the guitar's output, and double-tracked it.  Then I duplicated both tracks and pitched them up an octave, so it kind of sounds like a 12-string.  Lots of mellotron sounds on this one (vibes, strings flute).  The song kind of echoes Graveyard Mountain Home in sound and sentiment, albeit with a more conflicted narrator..."

Dec. 11, 2017 - Moore shares seventh CK demo, "Kings Park Youth," on Patreon

Kevin Moore has posted a new 3:09 demo song, titled "Kings Park Youth," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.   The tune is the first one that Moore has ever created solely using a guitar, he said.

"This is the first demo that I wrote and recorded on guitar alone, with no keyboards," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I had a demo version (just verses) of this song for a few years, which I recorded on a digital Tascam 8-track recorder.  I always wanted to complete the song and record a full produced version.  I found bassist and drummer Alex Scott on Fiverr.com and he added his tracks in the 2 days right before I posted the preview.  I think Fiverr is a great resource for working with other musicians, at least based on my work with Alex."

Nov. 14, 2017 - Moore posts YouTube video for CK demo, "Bonewalk"

Kevin Moore has posted a 4:28 video on YouTube for "Bonewalk," which is one of six demo songs released so far through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign.  The demo was originally shared with fans in December 2016.

"I released 'Bonewalk' to you guys on Patreon almost a year ago, December 17, 2016!" Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "Many thanks to patron Kim Arthur for the video, which just incorporates a subtle sound wave animation over the title card.  It's up on YouTube now - please share! :)"

Moore has previously stated that "Bonewalk" was mastered by Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, who also mastered and mixed Fates Warning's most recent album, Theories of Flight.  He also shared some insight into how the song was created when he first posted it last year.

"It started with a sample of some spontaneous chanting my brother Patrick captured at an 'ecstatic dance' gathering he organized in Costa Rica," Moore said.  "I started messing with some Rhodes piano riffs to accompany the chanting loop, and built the song up from there.  For the verses, I tracked the vocals and Rhodes part at the same time, which is new for me.  Later I replaced the improvised vocals with words that made (a little) more sense."

The other Chroma Key demos that can be heard on YouTube are "Mission" and "4-Track."  Those videos came after the keyboardist polled his Patreon patrons about making the demo releases available to stream online to help promote the new music, with an overwhelming majority of the voters in support of the idea.

So far, Moore has released six demo songs through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  There have also been seven bonus tracks shared with fans.

Sept. 10, 2017 - Moore posts YouTube video for CK demo, "4-Track"

Kevin Moore has posted a 3:48 video on YouTube for "4-Track," which is one of five demo songs released so far through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign.  The demo was originally shared with fans in February.

"I made a simple video for '4-Track' which is just a static shot of the track playing on my Maschine Studio production controller, showing the visual feedback on the color pads," Moore said in a post on Patreon.

When "4-Track" was originally shared with fans in February, Moore said it was mostly programmed on the Maschine.  "I played the drum patterns in real time, edited them for some variations, then added the bass, synth and Rhodes parts," he said.  "Later, I imported everything into Ableton Live where I tracked vocals and... more synth.  I kept adding new synth parts until my Mac became frustrated and threatened to leave me.  I hope you're satisfied."

The other Chroma Key demo that can be heard on YouTube is "Mission."  That video came after the keyboardist polled his Patreon patrons about making the demo releases available to stream online to help promote the new music, with an overwhelming majority of the voters in support of the idea.

So far, Moore has released five demo songs through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  There have also been five bonus tracks shared with fans.

Kevin Moore has posted a new four-minute demo song, titled "Somewhere Better," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.

"This is a stretched out groove track that probably wouldn't have been out of place on the first CK album, Dead Air for Radios," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I started messing around with recording guitar loops and riffs into Ableton Live.  I wanted to write something with a riff that just kept driving on, so it becomes kind of hypnotic (kind of like a Neu! track).  The main guitar part is just eighth notes on an A.  For the verses I added some Wurlitzer chord progressions to work a vocal melody over.  The washed-out synth pad that runs over the whole track is a Behringer DM12 polyphonic analogue synth."

June 1, 2017 - Moore shares fourth CK demo, "Broke Antenna," on Patreon

Kevin Moore has posted a new demo song, titled "Broke Antenna," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  The 4:50 song features Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos on guitar.

"Like Bonewalk, Broke Antenna was built up around another chanting sample recorded by my brother in Costa Rica," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I played a Rhodes riff around it and then programmed drums on Native Instruments Maschine.  Right before mixing I sent the track to Jim Matheos who laid down several tracks of (mostly improvised) guitar.  Thanks, Jim!"

The demo is the fourth released to fans through the Chroma Key Patreon campaign.  The first song, "Mission," was posted in December 2015 and was the first music released by Moore under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home.  The second song, "Bonewalk," was released in December 2016.  That track was mastered by Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, who also mastered and mixed Fates Warning's 2016 album, Theories of Flight.  The third demo, "4-Track," was posted in February.  There have also been four bonus tracks shared with fans.

April 13, 2017 - Moore to play on Matheos' instrumental project Tuesday the Sky

Kevin Moore will be appearing as a guest musician on the upcoming debut album of Tuesday the Sky, an ambient instrumental rock project that is the brainchild of Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos. The 10-track album, titled Drift, is slated for release through Inside Out Music on June 30, according to the music news website Blabbermouth.

Moore will play on two songs, the website said. Other guests include God is an Astronaut drummer Lloyd Hanney and Anna Lynne-Williams, who has performed under the stage name Lotte Kestner and is a vocalist and guitarist in the indie pop band Trespassers William.

"With this kind of music, it's a lot about creating a mood and letting that sink in and develop over long periods of time, as opposed to the more frenetic format of most prog music," Matheos said in the Blabbermouth article. Of possible live performances, he said: "It would be a challenge to bring this project but it is an interesting idea and one I would at least consider if there seems to be enough interest."

Tuesday the Sky is said to explore "expansive textures and ambient electronica" and take cues from artists such as Brian Eno, Boards of Canada, Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, according to Blabbermouth. March 9, 2017 - DT vocalist James LaBrie recalls first conversation with Moore

Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie recently recalled his first interaction with the progressive metal pioneers in the early 1990s, which came in the form of a phone call with original keyboardist Kevin Moore.  The singer's reflections came in a video interview posted online this week by The Dream Theater World, which describes itself as the band's official worldwide fan club. The interview was done in promotion of the band’s 25th anniversary tour for its 1992 breakthrough album, Images and Words.

"Kevin Moore was actually the first one I spoke to in the band," LaBrie said in the interview. "He's the one that called me up and said 'Hey, you know, we heard your tape. Man, you know, we want you to come down and seriously consider jamming with us.' I said, 'Hey, you know, sounds good. Can you send me some of your stuff?' I said, ‘What do you guys do?’ And Kevin said, ‘Oh we’re like progressive hard rock – metal.’ I said, ‘What? Really?’ You know, I’m a huge Rush fan, so I was like, ‘Really, like Rush?’ And Kevin’s like, ‘Yeah, yeah – that’s a great example. Rush, man.’ And I went, ‘Really, okay, I gotta hear this stuff.'"

LaBrie continued, "So they got me [the band's 1989 debut album] When Dream and Day Unite and they got me a few songs from Images and Words that they had already been working on. Needless to say I was like, ‘What the hell is going on here? This is phenomenal.'"

Feb. 27, 2017 - Moore posts YouTube video for CK demo, "Mission"

Kevin Moore has posted on YouTube a streaming version of "Mission," the first demo released through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign. The five-minute song, originally shared with his supporters in December 2015, was the first music released by Moore under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home album.

"Here's a link to the 'Mission' demo I just put up on YouTube," Moore said in a post on Patreon. "Let me know if you have any suggestions / ideas/ changes... Please share!"

The streaming version comes a few weeks after the keyboardist polled his Patreon patrons about making the demo releases available to stream online, with an overwhelming majority of the 242 voters in support of the idea. Moore posted the video on a new YouTube account created under the Chroma Key name.

At the time of demo's initial release in 2015, Moore said: "The song was built up around a guitar melody by Jim Matheos (heard in the choruses). The lyrics are from the poem 'Mission' by Leonard Cohen (from Book of Longing). I'll have to change them if I decide to include this song on an album!"

Since launching the campaign, Moore has released three demo tracks and four bonus songs. In addition to "Mission," he shared "Bonewalk" in December 2016 and "4-Track" in February 2017. The first two bonus tracks were instrumental versions of "Mission" and "Bonewalk." The two most recent bonus tracks were "I Got Nothing," which was recorded over a decade ago in Turkey, and an instrumental version of "4-Track."

The keyboardist has shared a new bonus track, titled "I Got Nothing," through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched in 2015 and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music. The 2:02 song was recorded over a decade ago in Turkey.

"This time I thought I'd pick out something obscure from the archives...," Moore wrote in the e-mail to his Patreon supporters. "Here's an instrumental I recorded one afternoon for my friend Theron Patterson's radio show on Açık Radyo in Istanbul back in 2005. It's a playful, stretched out groove that kind of goes along with this month's synth-groove theme."

Since launching the campaign, Moore has released three demo tracks and three bonus songs to fans. The first song, titled "Mission," was posted in December 2015 and was the first music released by Moore under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home. Dec. 19, 2016 - Moore shares second CK demo, "Bonewalk," on Patreon

Kevin Moore has shared a second demo through his Chroma Key Patreon campaign, which launched last year and invited fans to pledge an amount of their choosing to help fund new music.  The 4:28 tune, titled "Bonewalk," was mastered by Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, who also mastered and mixed Fates Warning's new album, Theories of Flight.

"It started with a sample of some spontaneous chanting my brother Patrick captured at an 'ecstatic dance' gathering he organized in Costa Rica," Moore said in a post on Patreon.  "I started messing with some Rhodes piano riffs to accompany the chanting loop, and built the song up from there.  For the verses, I tracked the vocals and Rhodes part at the same time, which is new for me.  Later I replaced the improvised vocals with words that made (a little) more sense."

The demo is available in MP3, FLAC,  and Apple Lossless (M4A) versions, with a bonus track for Chroma Key Enablers and multi-track stems for Chroma Key Collaborators to come.

July 28, 2016 - Matheos talks Moore in interviews with Loudwire, The Prog Report

Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos mentioned Kevin Moore in interviews earlier this month with music websites Loudwire and The Prog Report.  In the Loudwire interview, Matheos discussed working with Moore in response to a question about working with Fates Warning's original vocalist John Arch.

"With so many things I’d like to do outside of Fates Warning – and John is among them, or OSI is among them – it all comes down to my schedule and their schedule and then the question of inspiration," Matheos said in the interview, which was posted on July 8.  "In short, the answer is no, but I would love to.  No solid plans right now, but of course with anything I'm open to anything if John is available or if Kevin is available.  I'd love to work with either."

Matheos also discussed deciding which songwriting ideas go to Fates Warning and which go to OSI.  "I tend to write for whatever project I'm working on," he said.  "So if I'm working on an OSI record, I don't remember coming across something I thought was interesting and saying to myself, this doesn't fit, better save it for Fates or visa versa.  There's things on this record, songs like that last song we talked about 'Theories of Flight,' that could be adapted for an OSI record.  Kevin just hasn't gotten his hands on it."

In The Prog Report's interview, Matheos praised Moore's songwriting abilities and explained why he invited the keyboardist to appear on Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray album in 1997.

"Kevin first played with us on Perfect Symmetry, which was 1989," Matheos said in the interview, which was posted on July 6.  "I'd been good friends with Mike [Portnoy] for a long time and he turned me on to [Dream Theater], and I just loved the band.  We knew with Perfect Symmetry that we wanted to have some keyboards that Kevin would be a great addition to it... Getting back to A Pleasant Shade, we wanted to do something completely different, so we knew that there was going to be less of the two guitar parts that we'd traditionally had and the second guitar part's space would be taken up by keyboards.  For me, the first person I thought of to add those keyboards would be Kevin, because number one I love his writing and two even though a lot of the keyboard parts were written in advance I like the sounds he brings to the table.  Even if he's just playing something that I wrote, his sounds and his inversions, the way he interprets it adds so much to it.  He was the natural choice for us."

June 20, 2016 - Matheos talks about OSI, Moore in new interview with Noisefull

Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos briefly discussed OSI and Kevin Moore in a new interview with the music website Noisefull.  The interview, which was posted online last week, was in promotion of Fates Warning's upcoming album, Theories of Flight.  The album will be released through Inside Out Music on July 1.

Regarding the status of OSI, Matheos said: "Kevin and I are both busy doing other things.  I believe Kevin is experimenting and working on some Chroma Key material right now, so who knows...  In the future I would love to do it and if it happens that's great, but there are no plans right now.  My main focus for at least the rest of this year and probably next year is going to be Fates Warning."

Regarding the possibility of performing Fates Warning's 1997 album A Pleasant Shade of Gray (which featured Moore on keyboards) in its entirety for its 20th anniversary, Matheos said: "I would definitely consider it last year, when we did the reissue, which was a lot of fun and that was pretty much celebrating the 20-year anniversary.  We talked about doing some live shows for it like we did for Parallels and Awaken The Guardian, but the logistics of it are very difficult with Mark [Zonder] being busy and Kevin being busy.  So to bring it over with that lineup would be very hard at this point, and I'm not sure I want to do it with a different lineup.  Unfortunately, I don't think that’s probably going to happen in the near future anyway."

Regarding the possibility of working again with Fates Warning's original vocalist John Arch, Matheos also mentioned Moore: "Well, I'd certainly love to, I love working with John as much as I love working with Kevin in OSI.  Those are things that I really enjoy doing because it gives me a chance to do something outside of Fates Warning and it allows me to collaborate with people who I really admire and like working with."

Aug. 25, 2016 - Sherinian shares his thoughts about stepping in for Moore in 1994

Ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian, who replaced Kevin Moore in the band after his departure in 1994, shared his thoughts on the topic last week as part of a question-and-answer session with fans.  The Q&A video, which is posted on Sherinian's YouTube channel, features the keyboardist replying from Beachwood Manor Studios in Burbank, CA.  Questions were solicited last month by Dream Theater Forums member shadystraz360, a student of Sherinian and patch designer with Space4Keys.

"Well, I'll say this, it's not fun replacing an original member – it really isn't," Sherinian said.  "I know, as being a Van Halen fan, when they switched Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, I was not down with it at all.  Because you discover a band and that lineup is your band, and that's what you're used to.  Anyhow, members change.  I had to come in and replace Kevin."

Regarding Moore's keyboard playing, Sherinian said: "I think he sounds great on [Images and Words and Awake].  And I thought his keyboard parts were very well thought out.  I thought he used really good sounds.  I liked his solos too.  I tried to stay as true to his parts as possible.  During the solos I would start using his licks, but I wanted to put my own thing in there as well, so I tried to balance it as much as possible.  I really think Kevin did a great job on both of those records.  He should be proud of his work on that.  I think between the two, I would say I like Images and Words better."

In closing, Sherinian said there are some things he learned while studying Moore's parts on Awake that he still uses to this day.  "The way he distorted the choir sound and also the strings," Sherinian said.  "He had some distortion internally on the sounds and it made it cut through the tracks better.   And so, I use that on some things today.  So that's where I learned it from, from Kevin."

Jan. 18, 2016 - Moore referenced in Patreon article on prog blog Proglodytes

Kevin Moore is among a handful of musicians mentioned in an article posted today about the crowdfunding platform Patreon.  The article, which appears on the new prog blog Proglodytes, explores the increasing popularity of Patreon, which Moore is using to fund the release of his first music under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home.

"I didn’t pay this site much attention until I noticed one of my favorite artists, Kevin Moore, using Patreon to launch Chroma Key after a decade-or-so absence (he has of course been releasing music in OSI in the meantime)," wrote the article's author Arthur Hatton, whose username is arthur42 on The Mooreatorium Forum.  "Unable to contain my enthusiasm, I chose to pledge the full amount to show my still-raging love for Chroma Key."

In the story, Moore shares his thoughts about using Patreon over the past few months.  His first song, a five-minute demo titled "Mission," was released last month through Patreon with plans to release about one home-recorded song per month, along with its associated bonus tracks and submixes, he has said.

"Definitely feels too early to come to any conclusions about the Patreon approach and how it will influence my music," Moore said in the article.  "I know Spotify isn’t the answer. :)"

Dec. 2, 2015 - Dream Theater fan creates video of audio samples used on I&W

A Dream Theater fan has created a video giving us a look at the sources behind the audio samples used on the band's 1992 breakthrough album, Images and Words.  The video, which was published to YouTube on Nov. 30, includes audio samples ranging from rapper Kurtis Blow to actor Robert DeNiro.  Blow's sample was taken from his 1979 song, "Christmas Rappin'," and appears in the opening moments of Images and Word's third track, "Take the Time."  DeNiro's sample was taken from the 1978 film, "The Deer Hunter," and appears on "Don't Look Past Me," a song written during Dream Theater's I&W sessions that later appeared on the band's 1999 fan club album, Cleaning Out the Closet.

Other samples include short segments from Frank Zappa's 1979 song, "Dancin' Fool," and Public Enemy's 1990 song, "Power to the People."  In addition, the 1988 movie "Cinema Paradiso" and 1980 movie "Ordinary People" also have samples that appear in the minute-and-a-half video.

The video was created by Marc Papeghin of France, who is also known as PintoZ on the Dream Theater Forums and mpapeghin on The Mooreatorium Forums.  Papeghin has previously made videos featuring film footage of the audio samples used in Dream Theater's 1994 album Awake, 1995 EP A Change of Seasons, and 2003 song "Honor Thy Father."

Nov. 20, 2015 - New Chroma Key album to come as pledges hit $2,000 per song

Good news, Chroma Key fans:  A new full-length album is officially coming!  The Chroma Key Patreon campaign launched last month by Kevin Moore has reached the second and final milestone of $2,000 per song, meaning that a new full-length album will be professionally recorded, produced and mixed.  It will be the first music released by Moore under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home.

To reach the full-length album milestone, a total of 254 patrons donated money over the past three-and-a-half weeks.  The first milestone of $1,000 per song was reached early on in the pledging process, meaning that Moore would be releasing a selection of new songs as a Chroma Key EP.

But the fans didn't stop there. They wanted a full-length album. And, by golly, they made it happen. Now, we wait. But first, congratulations to all the Chroma Key fans worldwide for making this album happen!

Oct. 26, 2015 - Moore launches Patreon campaign to fund new Chroma Key music

The news that many Kevin Moore fans have been awaiting for over a decade has come: Chroma Key is back!  Moore launched a Patreon campaign today inviting fans to pledge a dollar amount of their choosing to help fund new Chroma Key music.  It would be the first music released by Moore under the Chroma Key name since 2004's Graveyard Mountain Home album.

"A while back, I crowdfunded the production of a CD with a Kickstarter campaign," Moore wrote on Chroma Key's new Patreon page.  "Patreon campaigns work a little differently.  You can support a musician's ongoing creative output by pledging a few dollars for each song they produce."

Moore said he plans to release about one home-recorded song per month, along with its associated bonus tracks and submixes.  If pledging reaches $1,000 per song, he'll release a selection of new songs as a Chroma Key EP.  If pledging reaches $2,000 per song, each song would be professionally recorded, produced and mixed – suitable for a full-length Chroma Key album.

July 27, 2015 - Deluxe reissue of Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray

Fates Warning will be releasing a three CD/DVD deluxe reissue of their critically acclaimed 1997 album, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, on Oct. 2.  The album, which features Kevin Moore on keyboards, features a single song divided into 12 tracks and will be reissued by Metal Blade Records, which made the announcement earlier today on its website.

"The album is notable for its darker mood and mixture of progressive rock and metal with hints of industrial, classical, and psychedelia," Metal Blade said.

The reissue will feature the original album on the first CD, with the second CD containing a live version of the album recorded during the band’s 1998 European tour as well as a soundcheck recording of "We Only Say Goodbye" and a studio cover version of The Scorpions' "In Trance."  The third CD in the package consists of demos from the pre-production and writing sessions.

Finally, the DVD portion of the set consists of two complete live performances of "A Pleasant Shade of Gray."  The first is a restored and re-edited version of the band’s 1998 VHS release and the second was filmed at The Whisky in Hollywood, California, in 1999.  Pre-orders as well as the first samples of music from this special edition will be available next Thursday, Aug. 6.

July 13, 2015 - I&W top prog album of past 25 years; "Metropolis" on Rock Band 4

Dream Theater's Images and Words album might have turned 23 years old last week, but it was honored with two special designations today.  The acclaimed album, which features Kevin Moore on keyboards, has been named the Top Prog Album of 1990-2015 by The Prog Report, a website dedicated to progressive music news, reviews and interviews.  In addition, the album's fifth song, "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper," has been announced as one of 11 new songs to be appearing on Rock Band 4, which is slated for release on Oct. 6.

"With the end of hair metal and the rise of Nirvana and grunge, this progressive metal band from Berklee found themselves with a gold record and a hit single with their 1992 sophomore album, Images and Words," The Prog Report said.  "For prog and metal fans left out in the cold with mainstream music, this album was critical.  This was also the first album to feature vocalist James LaBrie.  Dream Theater were the first band to master and find success in the new era of progressive music, combining the technicality of Yes with the heaviness of Metallica for a completely new sound.  Now celebrating 30 years, this was the album that started it all and much of the reason many of us are still into progressive rock and metal."

Other Dream Theater albums to make the list are 1999's Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory at #3, 2002's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence at #14, 1994's Awake at #18, and 2002's Train of Thought at #38. In addition to performing on Images and Words and Awake, Moore also performed on the #29 album, which was Fates Warning's 1997 album A Pleasant Shade of Gray.

March 5, 2015 - Artist for DT's Images & Words shares insight into cover's creation

Dream Theater was "very hands on" in creating the cover artwork for the band's 1992 breakthrough album Images and Words, according to an article posted online today by PROG magazine.  Larry Freemantle, the artist for the iconic album, said he was assigned the project through Elektra Records and he tried to make the cover compositionally look like an "old painting" from a design point of view.

"I remember I met with the band and we sat down and went through everything," Freemantle said in the article, which was written by Rich Wilson.  "They were very hands on in the early days.  John Myung was probably the key person I met along with John Petrucci.  Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy were also very much involved too.  They were very specific about what should be where on the sleeve.  It was just a matter of trying to piece it together.  So they wanted a little girl, they wanted the bird flying and that style of room.  It was a collage of engravings and illustrations which I thought was pretty cool.  The engravings and the room were from old engravings book that we spliced together, and the sky was worked into it too.  As for the font, I had that created and hired a calligrapher, John Stevens, as I wanted it to be personalised and to look like a type font.”

Freemantle also went on to discuss how it was to work with the band, calling them very "down to earth."

“They were easy going and it’s always easier to work with a new band than someone who has been around for a long time," he said.  "In the beginning they were so happy just to be doing some of the stuff we were doing, and it wasn’t a big budget job.  They were a very serious and professional band right from the start.  A lot of bands are like the deer in the headlights when it comes to ideas so their attitude was quite unusual.  They were always great when they came to the table as they always had ideas.”

Feb. 6, 2015 - Eren Başbuğ posts cover version of song from Moore's Shine album

A cover version of a song from Kevin Moore's Shine album has been posted online by a musician who appeared on Dream Theater's two latest releases.  Eren Başbuğ, a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music who contributed his conducting and arrangement skills to Dream Theater's self-titled release in 2013 and Breaking the Fourth Wall live album and video in 2014, posted a video on YouTube earlier this week of himself covering "Sh," a track from Moore's 2010 album Shine.

The performance took place at Bronx Pi Sahne, a nightclub in Beyoglu, Turkey, and served as an intro song during a tour of Turkey by Ivory, an independent band in Izir, Turkey.  The band's members are Başbuğ (Dream Theater, Jordan Rudess), Alus Doğucan Güneş (Dreamforge, Epikriz), Ali Özen (Kanca, Disenchant), Doğuş Ünver (Epikriz) and Cihan Köseoğlu (Ocean Cloud).

Moore's Shine is the soundtrack to the 2006 Turkish film, "Küçük Kiyamet (The Little Apocalypse)," which tells the horrific tale of a Turkish family torn apart by an earthquake.  In 2010, Moore announced a funding project to manufacture and release the soundtrack and fans exceeded the $3,000 benchmark in less than 24 hours, surpassing $10,000 overall.

Oct. 19, 2014 - Priester posts teaser video of new album featuring Moore

South African drummer Aquiles Priester posted a teaser video yesterday of his upcoming solo album that features Kevin Moore.  The album, titled "Our Lives, 13 Years Later...," contains 10 tracks and was created with Seattle-based guitarist Gustavo Carmo – with Moore appearing on the album's seventh track, titled "1Cluttered9 Inbox0."  Priester met Carmo while the two were on the same record label in 2001, and they later reconnected in the bands Versover and House of Bones, according to an announcement on Priester's Facebook page.

"As the name suggests, [the album] chronicles thirteen years of their lives, showcasing what they’ve accomplished, and how they’ve grown and matured as high caliber musicians in this profession of music," said the announcement, which was written by Antonio Carlos Monteiro.  "This piece of art is heavily rooted in progressive rock, but pulls punches from many different genres and styles, creating a style defying, timeless classic."

In addition to Moore, the album's other special guests special guests are Tony MacAlpine (guitar and keyboard), Vinnie Moore (guitar), Greg Howe (guitar), Nili Brosh (guitar), and Seda Baykara (violin).

Sept. 25, 2014 - Moore to appear on Aquiles Priester's upcoming solo album

South African drummer Aquiles Priester announced on his website last month that Kevin Moore is among a handful of guest musicians to appear on his upcoming solo album.  Priester, who worked on the album with Seattle-based guitarist Gustavo Carmo, said the album was recorded over 2013 and 2014 and will be mixed and mastered by Adair Daufembach at Daufembach Studio in São Paulo.

"The whole album was conceived through studio jams in a very spontaneous way," the announcement said on Aug. 7.  "It is an instrumental record that totals 9 songs, and counts on the following guest musicians: Bruno Ladislau, Francis Botene, Greg Howe, Juninho Carelli, Kevin Moore, Nili Brosh, Tony MacAlpine and Vinnie Moore."

Priester is the current drummer of Brazilian power metal band Hangar, German power metal band Primal Fear, and progressive metal bands Midas Fate and Noturnall.  He is also ex-drummer of Brazilian metal band Angra and was among a handful of drummers who auditioned to replace Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater in 2010.

Aug. 25, 2014 - Moore contributes keyboard parts to song by Drumquake

Kevin Moore revealed via Twitter earlier today that he contributed parts to a song titled "Electrified" by Drumquake, a Los Angeles-based band founded by drummer Sander Owen.  Owen writes and produces the band's songs and they only release digital singles, according to the band's website.

"When I heard 'Colorblind' with Chroma Key — the band that Kevin Moore started after leaving Dream Theater — I bought it immediately," Owen posted on the band's website on June 24.  "I started playing around with an idea.  What if he could guest on my next record?  It had several noteworthy participants already; he might actually take me seriously.  I sent him a request, and waited.  Just when I thought all hope was lost, he replied and said yes!  Mr. Moore has a practical approach to music production, which suits me fine.  I’m proud to have worked with him, and — as you can hear on 'Electrified' — his keyboard playing rocks."

Aug. 20, 2014 - Amadeus Awad announces release date, party for EP feat. Moore

Amadeus Awad's upcoming EP featuring Kevin Moore will be released on Sept. 13.  The Beirut-based progressive metal musician announced last week on Facebook that a release party for the EP, titled The Book of Gates, will take place on that date at a venue called Metro Al Madina.  The event will also feature a "first-of-a-kind live performance" by an act called Blank Resonance.

March 24, 2014 - Petrucci mentions Moore in interview about DT's early days

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci recently shared some memories of Dream Theater's early days involving Kevin Moore in an interview with FaceCulture.com, a Netherlands-based music website, conducted during the European leg of the band's "Along for the Ride" tour.  In the interview, Petrucci recalls the first riff he ever played on guitar, which incidentally took place at Moore's house.

"The first riff I ever played was 'Hey Hey, My My' – Neil Young," Petrucci said in the interview, which was conducted on Feb. 17.  "Very simple guitar part.  I was hanging out at a friend's house – actually at Kevin Moore, our first keyboard player, his house.  And there was a bunch of guys jamming, and I didn't really play.  I was pretty young.  And they were like – 'Hey, play this riff, it's really easy.'  And I played that."  Petrucci continued: "Myself, Kevin and John, we grew up together in our hometown on Long Island, and we were among a large community of musicians.  A lot of kids played.  I don't know what it was, but for some reason there were tons of bands.  There were always parties to go and play, and jam, and jam sessions.  It was a big part of how I developed my skills as a guitar player.  But even with all those bands and all those people, myself and Kevin and John, we kind of just slowly rose up as being the known guys – the known band…because we were like totally into it.  We practiced for six hours a day.  We were just completely obsessed.  There were other guys that were really good.  But I don't think they were as hardcore obsessed about it as we were."

Of listening to Dream Theater's 1989 debut album When Dream and Day Unite, Petrucci said: "I hear young guys that didn't know what they were doing.  We went into the studio – we were really young.  It was our first album.  We had like no time to do it, no experience.  The amp I used wasn't even mine.  The guitars, I borrowed.  We had fun."  He continued: "It just seems like that of youth – not as developed as it is now.  I think there's some good moments in the songs, and I think that we certainly established the style that would take us through the rest of our career – you know, sort of that progressive metal sound was absolutely established on the first record.  But you can definitely hear the immaturity as musicians, as players, as writers.  And personally, I think it's gotten better throughout the years.

Of the band's breakthrough album Images and Words in 1992, Petrucci said: "Images and Words, I feel like we made a major leap.  We had a different vocalist – James really ended up being the big sound of the band vocally and has been with us ever since.  So that was a huge difference.  The time that we spent preparing for that album and writing and auditioning singers and being in that sort of limbo stage made us really hungry to want to do well and get another shot at it.  And so I think it has a bit more maturity.  I think it was produced well.  It sounds better.  It's mixed better."

Jan. 28, 2014 - Petrucci talks about DT's decision to debut "Space-Dye Vest"

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci recently shared his thoughts on the band's decision to perform "Space-Dye Vest" live in concert for the first time.  Italian music website SpazioRock posted a video interview yesterday in which the guitarist said it was his idea to a play a suite of songs, which ultimately included "Space-Dye Vest," from the band's 1994 album Awake in recognition of its 20th anniversary.  The haunting piano-driven ballad is widely considered to be Kevin Moore's signature song, as he is credited with writing the song's music and lyrics and he departed the band shortly after the tune was recorded.

When asked why the band hadn't previously performed the song, Petrucci said: "I’m not really sure.  It’s actually a wonderful song to play live.  It has a lot of emotion.  It’s very dynamic.  And I think it’s a really cool song... I know initially after that album came out that song felt a little bit like a studio track type of thing, but I think we were wrong to think that because now playing it live it feels really natural."

Of paying tribute to Awake on this band's current tour, Petrucci said: "It was my idea to do a tribute to the Awake album, because this year marks the 20th anniversary since it's been released.  And we wanted to do a nice suite of songs from that album, just to show people that we’re playing tribute to that album."

Jan. 26, 2014 - Memory Hole 1 now available for download on Bandcamp

Kevin Moore has made Memory Hole 1 available again for download a decade after its initial release.  The 20-track album, which was first released in January 2004, consists of an 80-minute program that Kevin Moore created for Radio for Peace International.  The download, priced at $8.95 on Bandcamp, includes complete compact disc artwork in PDF format to print a hard-copy version of the album.

"This album is a document of a three-part radio program I produced at Radio for Peace International, a shortwave station in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica, in 2004," Moore said on his Bandcamp page.  "The program was centered on spoken-word samples from shows broadcast by the station.  I produced original music for the program, and collaborated with others locally and via email: Bob Nekrasov and Saya recorded monologues in Ciudad Colon.  Daniel Beierstettel, a former RFPI volunteer, contributed tracks from Germany.  Theron Patterson emailed grooves and muzak from Istanbul.  Music from third parties was used for a few backing tracks, namely by Múm, Fela Kuti and The Who.  Far right radio samples were contributed by station owner James Latham, excerpted from his two-part radio investigative program The Far Right Radio Review."

Moore created the Bandamp page earlier this month and made available for purchase the album Shine, which is the keyboardist's soundtrack to the 2006 Turkish film "Küçük Kiyamet (The Little Apocalypse)."  That album is available in a digital version for $8 and a compact disc version for $12.

Jan. 23, 2014 - Moore posts news, videos on topics from inmates to Pine Ridge

Kevin Moore has used his new Tumblr page to post a variety of videos and news items in the past week about topics ranging from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to the lives of female inmates at a prison in Iowa.  His most recent post was a link to an article, which appear in the Lakota Country Times in September 2009, about a mobile clinic used to prevent community members from having to travel long distances to get health care in Pine Ridge.  A few days earlier he posted a link to a piece on Time magazine's website, originally published in May 2013, that includes 31 photos of Pine Ridge taken by photojournalist Aaron Huey.

"The community of Sioux is confined to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, about 75 miles southeast of the Black Hills," Andrew Katz wrote in the story for Time.  "In 1890, it was the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre.  Today, it’s one of the most impoverished counties in the nation—a ground zero for substance abuse, gangs and domestic violence.  It’s also a final resting place for millions of misinformed opinions that nothing else happens there."

Moore's other Tumblr posts have included a link to a video documentary about American Indian activist John Trudell, a map of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, a photo of the exterior of the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women, and link to a trailer for a documentary titled "The Grey Area" about the lives of inmates at a maximum security women's prison in Iowa.

Kevin Moore's eBay sales continued this month with a sale of a Shine t-shirt and a Chroma Key three-song cassette demo that "just needed to be cleaned of some sticker residue," according to the item description.  The cassette sold for $50 on Jan. 16, while the Shine t-shirt, size 2XL, sold for $24.

Since early November, Moore has sold or auctioned numerous rare and last remaining items from Chroma Key's early days.  The previously sold or auctioned items include five versions of Moore's This Is a Recording CD that features demos from 1994-1997, eight sealed versions of Chroma Key's Dead Air for Radios CD from 1998, a rare Japanese version of the Dead Air for Radios CD from 1998, 10 copies of Chroma Key's three-song cassette demo with and without inserts from 1996, 13 versions of Chroma Key's "Colorblind" CD single from 1999, and a Chroma Key t-shirt.  He also sold a package that consisted of a concert poster promoting Moore's 2007 solo show at Balo Stage in Istanbul, along with his compact discs of his two soundtrack albums Ghost Book and Shine.

Jan. 16, 2014 - Dream Theater performs "Space-Dye Vest" live for first time

Dream Theater performed "Space-Dye Vest" live in concert for the first time during a show last night in Oporto, Portgual.  The concert, which was the band's kick-off show for its "Along for the Ride" tour, included a string of five consecutive songs from the band's 1994 album Awake in celebration of its 20th anniversary: "The Mirror," "Lie," "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream," "Scarred" and lastly "Space-Dye Vest."  News of the song's first-ever performance was broken by members of Dream Theater Forums (www.dreamtheaterforums.org) who were attending the show and posting the setlist in real time.

The haunting piano-driven ballad, "Space-Dye Vest," is widely considered to be Moore's signature song, as he is credited with writing the song's music and lyrics and he departed the band shortly after the tune was recorded.  Dream Theater's former drummer Mike Portnoy had previously said that the band would never perform the song.  "We definitely would never play this live without Kevin in the band," Portnoy said in his website's FAQ.  "It was totally 100% his song and had we known he was about to quit the band, we wouldn't have even put it on our album."

However, Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci had a different opinion when asked about the song last year by the blog I Heart Guitar.  "I mean, you never know," Petrucci told the blog.  "I’m not sure how great of a live song that’d be.  It’s obviously very mellow and spacey and atmospheric.  I mean, it could be a cool moment in the set.  It’d certainly be rewarding to people that have wanted to hear that.  It’s not the first song I’d go to when thinking of what to play in a live show...  It might depress the audience.  But it’s a cool song.  I’m sure eventually we will but I haven’t thought too much about that at this moment."

In January 2011, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess and vocalist James LaBrie performed a piano-only version of the song during a Jordan Rudess & Friends show in Tarrytown, New York.  When introducing the tune that night, LaBrie said that "Space-Dye Vest" was Kevin's "swan song" and also praised Moore for his creativity.  "I have the utmost respect for Kevin, and I think he's incredibly talented," LaBrie said.  "This was the last song he did with us, and I think appropriately so it was very different from anything that we were doing."

Jan. 12, 2014 - Moore launches new Bandcamp page and Tumblr blog

Two new webpages were launched this weekend by the man himself: Kevin Moore.  The first new webpage is on the music website Bandcamp and is offering fans the opportunity to purchase Shine, which is the keyboardist's soundtrack to the 2006 Turkish film "Küçük Kiyamet (The Little Apocalypse)."  The webpage is offering a digital version for $8 and a compact disc version for $12. "Trying out Bandcamp for selling CD's and downloads," Moore said in an announcement on Facebook.  "Allows more download options (FLAC, MP3 320 VBR, Ogg Vorbis, Apple Lossless and AAC), and bonus tracks/files.  If there's interest I'll add more albums..."

The second new webpage is a blog on the social-networking website Tumblr.  The blog, which is titled Big Dead Ned, currently displays two quotes from German writer and composer Hildegard von Bingen as well as a YouTube video about five members of the Lakota Nation and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota who ran in the New York City Marathon in November 2013.  The runners raised more than $20,000 through their participation in the marathon to help build a youth center in Pine Ridge, which is the second largest reservation in the country.  They originally planned to run the marathon in November 2012, but the race was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy, according to an article in the New York Daily News.

A rare Chroma Key t-shirt hit the auction block and some other early items sold like hotcakes last week, courtesy of Kevin Moore.  The keyboardist held an auction on eBay last week for an orange Chroma Key t-shirt, size XL,  from the Dead Air for Radios era.  The t-shirt, which was listed at $0.99, sold for $51 after 12 bids over a seven-day span on Nov. 23.

In addition, the last eight sealed versions of the CD single for Chroma Key's 1999 song, "Colorblind," sold out in just over 10 minutes for $11 each on eBay.  The four final three-song Chroma Key cassette demos, without the album insert, sold for $25 each in about 35 minutes the same day.

It was the third straight week that Moore has sold or auctioned rare Chroma Key items on eBay.  The previous sales include his final five copies of Chroma Key's three-song cassette demo with album insert included, which were priced at $25 each and sold out in just over an hour.  Those sales came just a few days after he sold his last eight sealed versions of Chroma Key's Dead Air for Radios for $15 each and auctioned off a rare Japanese version of the album for $51 after 22 bids over a three-day period.

Nov. 14, 2013 - Moore sells last five Chroma Key three-song cassette demos

Kevin Moore announced via Facebook this past weekend that he was selling his final five copies of Chroma Key's three-song cassette demo, which was originally available in 1996 and has a tracklisting is "On the Page," "Sounds Like Watercolor" and "Chroma Key."  The cassettes were priced at $25 each and sold out in just over an hour on eBay.  The sales came just a few days after Moore sold his last eight sealed versions of Chroma Key's Dead Air for Radios for $15 each and auctioned off a rare Japanese version of the album for $51 after 22 bids over a three-day period.

Fans commented on Moore's Facebook page that the cassette tape sales were taking them down memory lane.  One such commenter was Sean Andrews, the bassist for Redemption, which is the side project of Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder.  Andrews said Moore personally handed a cassette to him at NAMM.  "You had a bunch of them in a backpack," Andrews wrote.  "I wore that tape out. Good stuff!"

Sept. 26, 2013 - Alder talks "O Chloroform"; Moore's enrollment in medical school

Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder recently shared his thoughts on Kevin Moore's latest lyrics and revealed some of the keyboardist's non-music pursuits.  The heavy metal website Dead Rhetoric earlier this week posted an interview with Alder in which the singer explained how Moore came to contribute lyrics to "O Chloroform," the ninth-track track on Fates Warning's soon-to-be-released eleventh studio album, Darkness In a Different Light.  The album is slated for release on Sept. 30 in Europe, and Oct. 1 in North America.

"That's a funny one," Alder said of "O Chloroform."  "It's Kevin Moore's lyrics.  Go back to the Arch/Matheos thing, which at one point were supposed to be the songs for the new Fates Warning album, but I didn't work on them as much as I should.  Kevin, Jim and myself were working on a song, one of which ended up on the Arch/Matheos record.  He had written lyrics for that and they were unused, and when we were doing this song, I had my melody and Jim said, 'What about Kevin's lyrics?'  He gave them to me, and the melody was put together and it fit perfectly.  It took some weight off my back.  It's such a cool song, but I have no idea what the hell he's talking about... I know what chloroform is, but I don't know what he's talking about [laughs].  I should ask him, and every time I ask Jim, he tells me to ask Kevin, but good luck finding him."

The interviewer then asked Alder if Moore is still living in Turkey, to which Alder replied: "He's in America now;  he's going to be a doctor.  He's in his third year of medical school."

Aug. 29, 2013 - Moore co-wrote song on upcoming album by Fates Warning

Kevin Moore has once again teamed up with progressive metal pioneers Fates Warning and is credited with co-writing a track on the band's upcoming album.  The collaboration was revealed earlier today in a review by Brian Heaton of The Breakdown Room, an online forum for fans of Queensrÿche.  In the review, Heaton said that Moore contributed lyrics to music written by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos on "O Chloroform," the ninth track on the band's soon-to-be-released album, Darkness in a Different Light.

"The beginning of 'O Chloroform' harkens back to OSI at times, the collaborative project of Matheos and keyboardist Kevin Moore," Heaton wrote.  "Not surprisingly, Moore co-wrote the track, penning the lyrics to Matheos' music.  Moore has previously appeared as a guest on a number of Fates Warning releases, including 1997's A Pleasant Shade of Gray."

Fates Warning's eleventh studio album, Darkness in a Different Light, is slated for release on Sept. 30 in Europe and Oct. 1 in North America.  It is the band's first album since 2004's FWX.  Moore has previously appeared as a guest keyboardist on the band's A Pleasant Shade of Gray (1997) and Disconnected (2000) albums and also appeared on "At Fates Hands," a song from the band's 1989 album, Perfect Symmetry.

April 19, 2013 - Amadeus Awad praises Moore in interview with Lady Obscure

Beirut-based progressive metal musician Amadeus Award shared  his thoughts about Kevin Moore's playing ability and his reaction to securing the keyboardist as a guest musician on his band's upcoming EP, The Book of Gates, in a recent interview with LadyObscure.com, a music website.  The interview was brought to our attention earlier today by the lady herself, Nem Nol, in an e-mail to The Mooreatorium.

"I love Kevin’s work," Awad said in the interview.  "I am a huge fan of the early Dream Theater albums, and a die hard for the OSI sound.  The guy is insane.  I have always thought that the ultimate thing is to have this genius on board taking care of the keyboard department.  In the early stages of writing The Book Of Gates, I told the guys in the band that I will contact Kevin to have him record the keyboards for us.  Of course everyone thought I was losing my mind."

April 10, 2013 - Amadeus Awad posts teaser of upcoming EP featuring Moore

Beirut-based progressive metal musician Amadeus Awad has posted a minute-and-a-half teaser of his band's upcoming EP, The Book of Gates, on ReverbNation, a music-hosting website.  He also linked an interview on his Facebook page earlier this week with LebMetal, a Lebanese hard rock and heavy metal website, in which he discussed the EP's roster of guest musicians – including Moore on keyboards, Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen, Stratovarius's former guitarist Timo Tolkki, and Amanda Somerville, an American singer-songwriter primarily known for her work with symphonic metal bands such as Trillium, Avantasia and Epica.

Of Moore, Awad said in the interview: "Personally, I think if you want a collision between years of experience and amazing technique from one side, and extreme sensitivity and attention to emotional details from the other, you cannot but work with this superb artist.  Kevin managed to create a unique sound for The Book Of Gates, he studied our ideas, dissected our vision and came up with an artistic landscape of sounds that can paralyze any other keyboardist.  I am sure keyboard player in Lebanon will enjoy what we came up with together with Mr. Moore, there is a lot one can learn by watching the masters at work."

April 9, 2013 - Dream Theater's Images and Words wins March Metal Madness 2013

Dream Theater's 1992 breakthrough album Images and Words has been named "greatest metal album" in a fan-voted tournament, titled March Metal Madness 2013, coordinated by Loudwire, a hard rock and heavy metal news website.  Kevin Moore was the band's keyboardist for the album and penned the lyrics to three songs – including the hit single "Pull Me Under," which reached #10 on the Billboard charts.

To win, Images and Words beat out Metallica's Master of Puppets by garnering 58.87% of the total vote in the final round, which saw more than a quarter-million votes cast overall.  Prior to that, Images and Words defeated Megadeth's Rust in Peace in the semifinals and in the earlier rounds beat out Dio's Holy Diver, AC/DC's Back in Black, and Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance.

"Congratulations to Dream Theater and their landmark album Images and Words," Loudwire said earlier today in the announcement.  "Through the power of social media and an incredibly dedicated fan base, Images and Words is the champion of March Metal Madness 2013."

Jan. 19, 2013 - Fates Warning to "maybe" perform APSOG in its entirety in 2014

Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder said earlier this week that the band could perform its 1997 concept album, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, in its entirety once again as soon as next year.  The remark came in response to a fan's question on Twitter about the band's propensity to play songs from that album in concert.  The album, which consists of one song divided into twelve chapters, featured Kevin Moore on keyboards.

"Yeah, we've always played a few parts.." Alder wrote on Jan. 16.  "Maybe next year we'll play the whole thing.. Maybe.."

For Kevin Moore fans, the topic begs the question whether the keyboardist could join the band for such performances.  In a 2010 interview with The Breakdown Room, a rock music e-zine, Fates Warning and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos said the band would likely invite Moore to reprise his role should they ever perform the entire album again in the future.

"We have such a connection with OSI that I really don't want to dabble with it outside of that and mix up the chemistry," Matheos said when asked of the possibility of Moore contributing keyboard parts to future Fates Warning albums.  "A lot of Fates stuff isn't keyboard-oriented, so I don't see it happening as far as appearance on studio albums.  But any time he wants to come play live, I am all for that.  I'd love to play all of A Pleasant Shade of Gray again at some point."

Jan. 17, 2013 - Long Island college ensemble performs "Space-Dye Vest"

Kevin Moore's signature song has been brought to life by a college ensemble in his hometown area.  Suffolk County Community College's Contemporary Music Ensemble recently performed Dream Theater's 1994 song, "Space-Dye Vest," a haunting piano-driven ballad written by Moore just prior to his exit from the band.  The Mooreatorium obtained audio of the performance this week from Alex Nohai-Seaman, an assistant professor of music at the college, and has uploaded it for listening convenience to SoundCloud.

"I chose to perform this piece with the group after seeing Dream Theater in Richmond this summer," Nohia-Seaman said in an e-mail to The Mooreatorium.  "My ensemble originally consisted of a few guitarists, piano, cello, percussion, and the soprano.  There is not a whole lot of classical music we could have performed with that instrumentation, so I thought 'Space-Dye Vest' would be fun for the kids to try."

Nohai-Seaman said the ensemble ultimately included the soprano, a 12-string guitar, bass, piano, viola, cello, a drum set, percussion, and four electric guitarists – one of whom performed a synthesizer at the end of the song.  The assistant professor also said that a former student is believed to have video footage of the performance, but he is not sure sure if, or when, he will be able to get a copy of it.

Beirut-based progressive metal musician Amadeus Award announced today he is seeking a keyboardist to perform the parts recently recorded by Kevin Moore for his band's upcoming EP, The Book of Gates.

"Dear all, Amadeus Awad's EON is looking for a keyboardist," he announced on Facebook.  "You all know that the keyboard parts on our EP 'The Book Of Gates' are recorded by the great Kevin Moore (OSI, ex-Dream Theater), so if you think you got what it takes to play this role send an e-mail to manager@amadeusawad.com.  Candidates should be serious, have great techniques and are willing to travel with the band.  Spread the word."

In other news, Awad also announced today that another well-known musician appearing on his band's upcoming EP is Amanda Somerville, an American singer-songwriter primarily known for her work with symphonic metal bands such as Trillium, Avantasia and Epica.

Jan. 4, 2013 - Chaos Venture posts trailer of new album featuring Kevin Moore

Chaos Venture, a progressive psychedelic rock band based in Italy, posted a video trailer today on Facebook that features song excerpts from its upcoming album, which the band previously said features Moore as guest keyboardist on a song titled "Abduction."  In the teaser, the band describes the music as "space metal."

"A new genre named space metal will drive you to the next level of awareness, pushing our consciousness to the real genetic origin of the human being," the band said in the video.  "The bible tells us about beings that have come from other worlds and made the mankind; over centuries these beings have been transformed into divinities and the original plurality has been reduced to a single god."

The video also reveals that the band's new album is "coming soon" and that the trailer's music contains "rough mixed songs."  Other prominent guest musicians on the album are Fates Warning's former drummer Mark Zonder and Porcupine Tree keyboardist Richard Barbieri.

Dec. 20, 2012 - Moore to appear as guest keyboardist on EP by Amadeus Awad

Beirut-based progressive metal musician Amadeus Awad announced last week that Moore has collaborated as a guest keyboardist on his band's upcoming EP, The Book of Gates.

"We are very proud to unveil the name of the first international artist collaborating with us on The Book Of Gates," Awad said last week on Facebook.  "The man behind the keyboard mastery of the first three Dream Theater albums: When Dreams and Day Unite, Images and Words and Awake.  The mastermind of the prog rock project OSI: Mr. Kevin Moore."

In a separate post, Awad described The Book of Gates as a tale of a union separated by an abyss of psychological turbulence and the alliance of opposites with four characters – The Pharaoh, the Queen, the Necromancer, and the Keeper of the Gates – that travel through the fabrics of life and death's epiphanies.  The story also involves a quest for immortality, dictated by false doctrines and promises of lying priests, that places a huge political burden on the reign of the pharaohs.

"The writing of The Book Of Gates started as a collaborative work between the band members, resulting in a heavy progressive album with oriental elements never heard before," he said.  "Heavier sound, mighty production and huge international names mark the start of the band's new age, a new EON."

Nov. 1, 2012 - Dream Theater fans vote Moore as the band's best lyricist ever

Kevin Moore is leading the way in an ongoing poll to determine the band's best lyricist at Dream Theater Forums (dreamtheaterforums.org.)  Moore, the band's founding keyboardist, has an overwhelming 45% of the total vote so far, followed by bassist John Myung with 29%, and guitarist John Petrucci with 15%.

"Simple as the title says, what band member wrote the best lyrics?" asked Glass Moonlight, a New York-based forum member who started the poll, in his opening post.  "My vote undoubtedly is KM [Kevin Moore], his lyrics were so deep and thought provoking.  'Don't Look Past Me,' 'Pull Me Under,' and 'Surrounded.'  Just awesome.  My second pick would be John [Petrucci], 'Voices' is just insane.  Also throwing in a mention for John Myung's stuff, 'Trial of Tears' was stellar."

Other poll choices are the band's current vocalist James LaBrie, founding drummer Mike Portnoy, and Charlie Dominici, who was the band's vocalist for its 1989 debut album, When Dream and Day Unite.  They have approximately 9%, 2%, and 0% of the votes, respectively.

Sept. 14, 2012 - Prog Sphere premieres Rigoni's "Mizaru" featuring Kevin Moore

The music website Prog Sphere posted an exclusive premiere today of "Mizaru," the second track from the upcoming album of Italian bassist and composer Alberto Rigoni.  The tune features Moore on keyboards, Paolo Valli on drums, and Tommy Ermolli on guitars.  The album will be available on October 1.

"Mizaru is one of the three wise monkeys that together embody the proverbial principle 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," Rigoni said in the announcement on Prog Sphere.  "The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering who ears, who sees no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil."

Asked about working with Moore, Rigoni adds: “The song is instrumental.  When I composed it, I had in mind to ask Kevin Moore to play over it.  I love Kevin’s tone and sound.  I started playing bass because of Dream Theater, in particular because of Images and Words and Awake albums.  Kevin did an incredible job on those albums and I was shocked.  It’s a great honor to have him on the album."

June 20, 2012 - Dream Theater Forums votes "Radiologue" as OSI's #1 song

The website, dreamtheaterforums.org, hosted a series of polls starting in January in which forum members voted "Radiologue" as OSI's all-time greatest song.  To find the top song, forum members voted off their least favorite songs one at a time from each album to determine the "survivor," and top tunes then went against each other in a final round that concluded last week.  The comprehensive results were posted earlier today by forum member ReaperKK, who coordinated the polls.

The band's 2009 song, "Radiologue," took the top overall spot defeating "Blood" in the finals by a 6-5 vote.  The third-place song was "Invisible Men," followed by "Go" and "Wind Won't Howl" in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The first-place songs from each studio album were as follows: "OSI" from the band's 2003 album, Office of Strategic Influence; "Bigger Wave" from the 2006 album, Free; "Radiologue" from the 2009 album, Blood; and "Invisible Men" from the 2012 album, Fire Make Thunder.

June 11, 2012 - DT's "Pull Me Under" named to Top 100 songs for Long Islanders

Dream Theater's greatest hit has landed on a list of greatest songs in Long Island history.  The 1992 tune "Pull Me Under," which is the opening track on the band's most commercially successful album Images and Words, was ranked #85 this week on a list titled, "The Top 100 Songs Long Islanders Should Know."  The list was created by Newsday, a daily newspaper that caters to Long Island, NY, which is where Dream Theater originated.

Founding members Kevin Moore, John Myung and John Petrucci grew up in Kings Park, while founding drummer Mike Portnoy grew up in Long Beach.  Moore wrote the lyrics for the song, which at the time peaked at No. 10 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, a ranking of the most-played songs on mainstream rock radio stations.

"These are the 100 songs every Long Islander should know – songs by people from here, about here, and written and recorded here, that also have changed the world of music," Newsday reporter Glenn Gamboa wrote in the article.  "And by here, we go along with the Long Island Music Hall of Fame’s definition of Long Island: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk."

May 18, 2012 - Matheos: OSI shows "more likely than not" for this year

OSI guitarist Jim Matheos gave fans hope that the band's first live shows will take place sometime this year in an interview posted today on the music website Metal Talk.

"We are hoping to, and we've said this for every record now and I think we are getting closer to it," Matheos said of live shows.  "I am looking to have a meeting with Kevin [Moore] this week and, as you pointed out, there are some obvious obstacles that have to be overcome like layered and multiple guitar, keyboard and drum parts, loops, etc.  We are going to see what we can do, and I think this is our best opportunity.  So I'd say it's more likely than not we can organize some decent shows sometime this year."

In the interview, Matheos also said that his favorite OSI album is Blood and that he prefers to approach songwriting collaborations in the long-distance format that OSI has adopted.

"It's a much preferred way," he said.  "It's done very much on a choice and a necessity.  Both Kevin and I like to take our time to explore different ideas to really experiment on our own before we present ideas to each other.  Doing it this way gives me time and comfort to try out different things and, you know, maybe nine out of ten things either don't work or maybe sound really stupid.  And I'd rather do that on my own than having people watch me do it and having the studio clock ticking all the time.  So it's really done out of necessity and we both feel comfortable this way."

April 24, 2012 - Moore interviewed by The Genghis & Ragman Show

The Genghis & Ragman Show, which can be accessed at TheRightToRock.com, posted a podcast several days ago that concludes with a roughly 30-minute interview with Kevin Moore in which he discusses everything from possible concerts to OSI's "caveman-like" lyrics.

"We had a really hard time coming up with a title for this album," said Moore, who noted he stumbled across the phrase "Fire Make Thunder" and thought it "rang true."  "It [the album] has like a primitive feel to it,  there's like a more organic primitive feel to the whole album.  Some of the language is kind of like that, more of a primitive English I guess would say... I guess that's why it [the title] worked."

Of "Big Chief II," Moore said the song was intended to be an instrumental track.  "This was something I didn't do until the mixing," he said of adding vocals.  "We were actually at the mixing studio, which usually is when we get together finally at the end...and I thought I'd try a vocal part real quick.  I had some verses that I'd written a few months earlier, and I tried singing those... So I just went with that.  At 5:00 in the morning I put a note under Jim's door saying 'Check out what I did with this song and tell me if you like it.'"

Of possible concerts, Moore said: "Right now we're really trying to get it together... After that first one [show], the rest will be easier to do... We actually have an initial idea of just recording a live performance maybe even in a recording studio, and just performing it live...and then maybe build upon that for a live show."

Kevin Moore gave fans insight yesterday into the radio samples heard throughout OSI's "Cold Call," which is the opening track on the band's recently released fourth studio album Fire Make Thunder.  Moore posted a YouTube link on Facebook and Twitter that contains full audio of Bob Sievers, who was the radioman at the microphone during the false alarm of the Emergency Broadcast System that aired on Fort Wayne, Ind.-based WOWO in 1971.  As the story goes, AT&T later reported that the U.S. Air Force accidentally used the wrong tape when conducting its required weekly emergency test.

March 24, 2012 - Moore selling additional copies of the film soundtrack Shine

Moore announced yesterday that he has made available additional copies of his soundtrack to the 2006 Turkish film, "Küçük Kiyamet (The Little Apocalypse)," which he describes as a "kind of supernatural, post-traumatic drama centered on Turkey's recent earthquakes."  The album, titled Shine, is now available for pre-order and shipping will begin on April 10, Moore said.  All copies are signed and fans will instantly get a digital download version of the music when they order.  The price is $20.

Shine was originally made available in 2010 when Moore launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.com asking fans to pledge donations to assist in the manufacturing and distribution of the album.  Fans successfully met the fundraising goal of $3,000 in less than 24 hours.

March 19, 2012 - OSI's "Big Chief II" now streaming on Prog Archives

OSI fans are used to some off-the-wall lyrics, but they've never heard anything like "Big Chief II."  The roughly three-minute song from the band's upcoming fourth studio album, titled Fire Make Thunder, was posted online today in a streaming audio format by Prog Archives, a website that caters to the progressive rock music community.

OSI vocalist/keyboardist Kevin Moore teased fans in the fall by randomly posting the song's curious lyrics on Facebook, with verses like: "Chief leave nothin before he drop; Hock his rhymes at the pawn-it shop; Mail his feathers to an astronaut; Spent all the cash on a corner plot."

March 5, 2012 - OSI's "Cold Call" track now streaming online

OSI fans received a very special treat today in the form of a call – or, more precisely, "Cold Call."  The roughly seven-minute opening track from the band's upcoming fourth studio album, titled Fire Make Thunder, was posted online this morning in a streaming audio format on the website of Decibel Magazine, a monthly metal magazine.  The website describes the track as "clear, crisp, yet remarkably dense."

"Prog nerds rejoice!  It’s the new OSI track 'Cold Call,'" the website said.  "There’s a wide variety of influences streaming across the album’s eight outstanding tracks, and while we here at the Deciblog might be inclined to premiere OSI’s re-tooling of Kool & The Gang’s 'Joanna' (sorry, this joke’s best meant for April 1st), we settled on mid-tempo thumper 'Cold Call.'"

March 1, 2012 - Matheos talks OSI's Fire Make Thunder with Metal Insider

OSI guitarist Jim Matheos shared his thoughts on the band's upcoming fourth studio album, titled Fire Make Thunder, in an interview posted today by the music website, Metal Insider.

"For me, I think it’s mostly a positive," Matheos said of his long-distance collaboration with Kevin Moore.  "If you’re talking about the long distance part of it, it gives us the opportunity to work on things on our own and to develop them, and take our time before we pass them on to the other guys for review and further development.  If there’s any downside, I guess you lack that immediate response that sometimes is nice.  It may take a couple days to a week or longer to really get feedback on where an idea is going; to see where we want to take a song.  So it takes a little longer, but again in the long run, for me it’s a much more comfortable relationship without having to worry about the clock ticking, and being able to try different things on my own to see if they work or not instead of having to do that in front of a bunch of other people."

Feb. 28, 2012 - Matheos talks OSI's Fire Make Thunder with Bloody Disgusting

OSI guitarist Jim Matheos shared his thoughts on the band's upcoming fourth studio album, titled Fire Make Thunder, in an interview posted yesterday by the music website, Bloody Disgusting.

"It’s always hard when you’re so close to an album to look at it objectively," Matheos said.  "I can look back at Blood now and say yeah, that was our heaviest record.  There was a lot of heavy guitar-driven songs.  It’s easier to look at that album and give an objective opinion than it is with this one, which I’ve lived with close to two years, day in and day out.  So it’s really hard to be objective.  But I would agree.  I think that there’s a little less of the heavy guitar-driven things.  It does seem to be a heavy record for me, but again, not necessarily in the obvious, heavy metal kind of way.  Thematically, lyrically, and mood-wise, I think it was a consistent dark mood throughout the whole thing.  And that’s not to say that it’s extremely mellow all the way through.  It does have heavy guitar parts throughout."

Feb. 27, 2012 - Ytsejam.com interviews Moore about OSI's Fire Make Thunder

Kevin Moore recently spoke about OSI's Fire Make Thunder with Ytsejam.com, a website geared toward progressive rock/metal news, reviews and interviews.

"I think from the keyboardist's perspective, I really tried to focus on sounds that I like which I have used in the past, that are usually more organic sounds, less sort of high-def brilliant sounds and more sort of 'real instrument' sounding, low-fi kind of stuff, because that works comparatively well with the material," Moore said in the interview, which was posted online on Feb. 25.  "So a lot of of mellotron-ish and analog synth sounds and not so much digital pads or programming, or a lot less of it, I would say. I tried to keep that unified throughout the whole album, whereas, I think with the past OSI albums I did it on a song by song basis and try to see what I would come up with musically. This time I was a little more conscious to create as a whole, something that you can listen to from beginning to end, feeling like one solid piece, one solid mood."

Of a new Chroma Key album, Moore said: "I think there will be another Chroma Key album, I have a couple songs ideas that I have recorded. I'd like to do another one, but there are no set plans for it right now."

Feb. 22, 2012 - Harrison mentions his work on new OSI album

OSI drummer Gavin Harrison briefly mentioned his work on the band's upcoming fourth studio album, titled Fire Make Thunder, in an interview posted today by the music website, Hit Channel.  In the interview, Harrison said he has never spoke with Kevin Moore or guitarist Jim Matheos, "not even on the telephone."

"I like the music very much and they would send me the tracks and I would play the drums," Harrison said.  "I would send then an MP3 mix of what I did and they would give me comments along with suggestions on what they would like to hear adjusted.  It’s a long distance email relationship, but I really liked what they do and the new album is very good."

Feb. 16, 2012 - Metal Assault posts interview with Moore on Fire Make Thunder

MetalAssault.com posted a seven-minute audio interview with Kevin Moore today in which the OSI vocalist discussed the band's upcoming fourth studio album, Fire Make Thunder.

"We pretty much have a process down, whereas the first album we really didn't know what the hell was going on," Moore joked of he and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos.  "But I think now he knows the sort of approach I'm gonna take and the sort of things I like to do with his guitars,  whether it's processing them or shifting them an octave down, or just changing chords or asking asking him for more chords."

Of playing live with OSI, Moore said: "I'd like to play live with OSI.  I think that's the next step... We're trying.  We always try.  But again, we're trying this time to see if we can make it a live thing.  Right now we're trying to put something together just on a small scale, maybe just record a performance in a studio, and if that works out maybe we'll do some live shows.  So we're trying to figure that our right now."

Feb. 13, 2012 - Moore, Matheos talk "Fire Make Thunder" in video interview

OSI's first video interview from the "Fire Make Thunder" era has surfaced.  In the interview, band members Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos talk about OSI's upcoming fourth studio album with Metal Blade Records CEO Brian Slagel.  The roughly 10-minute video was posted exclusively today on Guitar World's website.

"For me the album, when I listen to it after mastering from beginning to end, it seemed to me this album had a more consistent mood to it," Moore said in the video.  "It's kind of more mellow, I would say, overall than previous albums.  It definitely has like a certain sound to it.  The overall production, the sound of it, the keyboard sounds are more unified throughout the whole thing, and a little bit more organic sounding."

Of his lyrical process, Moore said: "I want to get across what I'm talking about.  At the end of an album, I notice there is kind of a theme throughout an album.  So, you know, a lot of the lyrics...I'm just mumbling along and like certain sounds will come out.  Sometimes I'll actually record like that.  I'll just sing along and make up lyrics....I don't write the lyrics separately."

Of possible live performances for OSI, Matheos said: "It's something that we look at occasionally, and we're looking at again now.  This music isn't something where you can just get up on stage and just play it without a lot of rehearsal and a lot of production in it."  Slagel also hinted that there is a 90 percent chance that the band will be doing some sort of "untraditional" live performance.

Feb. 8, 2012 - Dream Theater fan creates video of spoken-word samples in Awake

Dream Theater fan Marc Papeghin of France – known as PintoZ on the Dream Theater Forums – created a video compilation this week that features the film footage from almost every audio sample on the band's 1994 Awake album, as well the band's 1995 EP, A Change of Seasons.  Papeghin previously made a video of samples that appear in the band's 2003 song, "Honor Thy Father."

"It's all a giant puzzle really!" Papeghin said in an email to The Mooreatorium.  "Transcripts of almost every sample has already been made on DT faqs, so I didn't have to figure out everything myself.  The real work was to acquire and edit all the movies, and synchronize everything in the right order.  I find it pretty fun."

Of Kevin Moore's use of samples, Papeghin said: "Since we're talking about Kevin Moore, 'Space-Dye Vest' definitely was the most interesting to put together.  'The Fifth Estate' documentary was pretty hard to get, but I eventually found someone on the internet who had it and burnt me a DVD.  I did my best to find the Jim Hill comments on OJ Simpson and the Conan O'Brien segment, unsuccessfully I'm afraid."

Feb. 4, 2012 - Dream Theater featured on VH1 Classic's "Metal Evolution"

Dream Theater will be one of several bands featured this evening in an hour-long episode about the genre of progressive metal on VH1 Classic's program, "Metal Evolution."  In the segment, Dream Theater is cited as "picking up the progressive metal mantle" from Queensrÿche during the early-to-mid 1990s, which is the era in which Kevin Moore was the band's keyboardist.  The segment also includes a clip of the music video for Dream Theater's 1994 song, "Lie," which features lyrics by Moore.

The documentary series is directed by anthropologist and film-maker Sam Dunn and director, producer and music supervisor Scot McFadyen about heavy metal subgenres.  The progressive metal episode airing tonight is the season-one finale and is the season's eleventh episode, with past episodes highlighting the genres of glam, thrash and grunge, among others.

Jan. 23, 2012 - OSI unveils album/track titles, artwork and audio samples

OSI's upcoming fourth studio album is titled Fire Make Thunder and will be released on March 27, according to a press release issued today by Metal Blade Records.  The band also shared titles of the album's eight songs as well as the album's cover artwork and a roughly six-minute audio medley video that includes new photos of Kevin Moore and OSI guitarist Jim Matheos.  The track listing is as follows: 1) Cold Call; 2) Guards; 3) Indian Curse; 4) Enemy Prayer; 5) Wind Won't Howl; 6) Big Chief II; 7) For Nothing; 8) Invisible Men.

"OSI is a long distance partnership, both musicians typically writing and recording alone and sending song ideas back and forth for further elaboration," the release said.  "Written and recorded throughout most of 2011, this latest release once again reflects the eclectic influences of both Matheos and Moore."

The press release continues: "Returning as the band’s session drummer is Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree, this time co-writing one of the tracks with the band.  All other instruments and programming were performed by both Matheos and Moore, while vocals and lyrics were handled exclusively by Moore.  All of the recording, with the exception of drums, was done by Moore and Matheos at each musician’s respective home studio with drums being recorded at Harrison’s home in London.  Final overdubs as well as some additional writing/arranging was completed in July 2011 in Jamaica, Iowa, where the band mixed alongside engineer Matt Sepanic at Sound Farm Studio and Recording Environment.  Mastering was handled by renowned engineer Roger Siebel.  The record was produced by both Moore and Matheos."

Jan. 13, 2012 - Matheos shares details on OSI4 with Hit Channel

OSI guitarist Jim Matheos revealed some details on OSI's upcoming fourth studio album in an interview posted today by the music website, Hit Channel.  In the interview, which was conducted on Jan. 2, Matheos revealed that Metal Blade Records was expected to release a press this week about the album, along with audio samples, song titles and pictures.  He also said that there are no guest musicians on the upcoming album and that the band is considering the possibilities of live shows sometime this year.

"You know it's coming out in March and there is supposed to be a press release coming from Metal Blade next week and basically they asked me not to tell anything about it before the press release because I guess they want to get all the attention when it comes out," Matheos said.  "Kevin and I are really happy with it,  but that's all I can say. There will be a bunch of information released next week as far as titles, pictures and some samples coming out next week on OSI website and on Metal Blade as well."

Regarding the use of guest musicians, Matheos said: "Not in this one. We decided for this one that Kevin and I we're gonna take care of everything, except for the drums that neither of us can do.  It just turned out that way, we felt comfortable with the material that we were writing and  he felt comfortable with all the vocals.  You know a lot of times in the past we liked some of the songs that Kevin didn't felt comfortable doing lyrics and vocals for them for whatever reason so we brought a guest vocalist here and there. For this one it didn't work out that way so it's just Kevin, Gavin and I."

Regarding the possibility of an OSI tour, Matheos said: "You know it's like the Arch/Matheos thing. It's hard to put together. We're talking about it, we may do a couple of shows this year but we've talked about it in the past also and has never happened so far and I can't make promises. I will do everything I can to do it cause I think it will be a great show."

Jan. 10, 2012 - In Progress posts new song featuring lyrics, vocals by Moore

Experimental rockers In Progress posted a new song on SoundCloud.com today that features lyrics and vocals by Kevin Moore.  The 3:39 tune, titled "Plan B," features lyrics such as: "I got blood on my hands and a list of demands for a game plan.  I want a Greyhound bus and a nurse by the end of this song... The ship is coming in."

"This is a one-off track I with Kevin Moore after our North Atlantic Echoes sessions," said band member Jake Rosenberg in the song description on SoundCloud.  "The song was written as a demo during the Signal Failure sessions, but nothing ever came of it.  I'm really excited with how it turned out and wanted to share it with everyone. Please note that this is just a rough mix/demo. Hope you enjoy."

Jan. 4, 2012 - In Progress reveals art for upcoming EP featuring Moore

Experimental rockers In Progress revealed the cover artwork today for their upcoming EP, titled North Atlantic Echoes, which features Kevin Moore on three tracks. The artwork was done by Sweden-based artist Alessandro Falca, who handled the artwork duties for Moore's Shine album in 2010.

"Kevin introduced us to [Alessandro] after Jake [Rosenberg] and I expressed our appreciation of it," said band member John Dillon of Falca's work on Shine. "Alessandro worked closely with us on the art direction, and Jake and I are both really excited with the end result. Just as cool as the cover is the artwork on the interior of the package and the disc itself, which you'll just have to wait to see when the record starts coming off the presses!"

In an email to The Mooreatorium, Falca called working with In Progress a "truly enjoyable experience" and called the band "incredibly talented." He also said the artwork suits the introspective mood of the album, which he said consists of "a collection of sensations while you are floating alone in an ocean."

"To translate visually the images evoked in my mind, I digitally manipulated five different pictures I took some years ago while sailing around the Mediterranean Sea," Falca said. "I've been also hiding several 'Easter eggs' here and there, some are strictly connected to the songs, others pointing a little bit further but I don't want to spoil all the fun. But I can give you a clue, call it a challenge: the red echo wave is a heavily distorted message for you to discover."

Dec. 29, 2011 - Arthur42 releases album cites Moore as "primary influence"

Arthur Hatton, also known as arthur42 on The Mooreatorium Forum, released his first full-length album last month and cited Kevin Moore as his "primary influence" in an interview with Linescratchers, a music blog he created in 2008 about musicians who are Latter-day Saints.  In the Q&A, the Georgia-based singer-songwriter discussed his nine-track album, titled Odes, and said that Moore's songs helped open his mind to new possibilities in music.

"This might surprise people who know what Kevin’s music sounds like because I don’t know that it really sounds anything like mine," Hatton said.  "But Kevin Moore really stretched the boundaries of what I thought was possible with music, giving up a semi-famous life in a semi-famous band (Dream Theater) to really explore himself and his own music.  I really wish I could say more about him in a short interview, but suffice to say he’s the inspiration behind a lot of what I’ve composed.  I covered one of his songs [Chroma Key's 'Colorblind'] live with my two siblings not too long ago (it’s my favorite song in the world)."

Dec. 14, 2011 - Rare official fanzines give insight into DT's "6:00"

Michael R. Ebert, known as Mebert78 on The Mooreatorium Forum, secured rare copies of the four official fanzines printed during Dream Theater's Kevin Moore era earlier this month in an online sale.  Some of the most notable Moore-related tidbits came in an interview with guitarist John Petrucci and vocalist James LaBrie that appeared in a fanzine released shortly after Moore's departure from the band in 1994.  In the interview, the duo discussed in depth the song "6:00," which was penned by Moore for the Awake album.

"It was one that Kev wrote," Petrucci said in the interview, which was conducted in London on Aug. 23, 1994.  "He pretty much wrote the whole thing. We fucked around with the choruses a bit and the ending of the song, but the majority of the arrangement and all the parts, Kev wrote."

LaBrie offered his interpretation of the lyrics: "If you don't take life by the reins and chase after something you love and need to do to carry on, then life will just pass you by."  He added: "The way it starts out, it's 6:00 and this guy doesn't want to get up because he has to go to work... He finds himself outside of work, sitting in his car, he can't get out of the car to go into work 'cause he just does not want to do this anymore."

The song's "6:00 on a Christmas morning" sample originated from James Joyce's 1914 short story, "The Dead."  Of that story's connection to the song, Petrucci said: "There was this conflict with the character, getting up for Christmas and sort of losing the meaning and interest of it."

The band earlier this year also covered OSI's 2003 song, "Head."  Moore later posted about that effort on his Twitter account in March calling it a "nice cover of 'Head' (OSI) by Worldengine.

hobo amp stack, technical insult

washing my hands at the toothbrush urinal

thinning the mix till I win at the race track

bathtub broke so I filled it with mouse traps

let's get dark out, who let the cat back

Michael R. Ebert, also known as Mebert78 on The Mooreatorium Forum, wrote a review of Dream Theater's induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame that was published today on The Breakdown Room, a rock e-zine.  In the article, Ebert recounts guitarist John Petrucci's thoughts on how the band's Long Island childhood and experiences played a role in shaping its future and how local radio in the 1980s contributed to the band's sound and success.

The induction ceremony took place before a standing room-only crowd at the famed Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY.  The band's other Long Island natives are bassist John Myung, original keyboardist Kevin Moore, current keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and ex-drummer Mike Portnoy, who left the progressive metal band in September after a 25-year stint.

Nov. 5, 2010 - Shine artwork and graphic designer revealed

Moore announced today on his Kickstarter page that the artwork for Shine is complete and the graphic designer is Alessandro Falca of Conte di San Pietro.  The album design consists of a six-panel digipak with an original illustration based on the Shine teaser video done in the style of the classic Penguin Books.  Falco is currently working on the Shine poster and t-shirt designs with pre-orders expected to ship later this month or in December.

"Realizing the artwork for a movie soundtrack is about finding the right mood of the music featured in it, not necessarily in a one-way road to the imagery of the film," Falca said in the update on Kickstarter.  "Küçük Kiyamet is an excellent specimen of cinema, both visually and conceptually, with a brilliant soundtrack; the challenge has been creating something with its own heartbeat, with interpretations on different levels."

"Zepora and I decided to write to this song because her husband and my boyfriend at the time are huge Dream Theater fans, and she and I fell in love with the song," McGee told The Mooreatorium.  "Our troupe, Trybe Habibi Bizarre, loves to use unconventional music in our dance performances – usually of the rock and metal persuasion."

Oct. 9, 2010 - Shine deadline expires; pledges exceed $10,000

The pledging total for Moore's Shine album on Kickstarter.com reached the $10,000 mark – and exceeded that amount if you count pledges made by other methods such as PayPal – as the pledging deadline expired at noon yesterday.  In an update posted this morning, Moore said he'll be collecting t-shirt sizes and addresses from fans shortly and plans to mail advance CD-Rs to fans next week after they arrive from the manufacturer.

"This has proven to be a great way to work independently, since you can gauge interest in a project before spending thousands of dollars producing it," Moore said in the update.  "Those who have the resources to make larger pledges are a big part of what can make this fundraising method work, so a special thank you to everyone who contributed $100 and over."

Moore said that he'll continue to post updates on Kickstarter until the release in November.  He also has more projects in mind and invited fans to join the mailing list at chromakey.com.

July 20, 2010 - Fan revamps Moore-related Wikipedia pages

Philip Thomas, also known as unalaguna on The Mooreatorium Forum, has devoted dozens of hours this year to significantly beefing up a series of Wikipedia pages related to Kevin Moore – most recently revamping the writeup for OSI's 2009 album, Blood.  Other Moore-related  Wikipedia links he's worked on are OSI's Office of Strategic Influence and Free albums.  He's currently editing the page for Chroma Key's Graveyard Mountain Home album.

Thomas, who has been regularly updating Wikipedia pages since 2007, said he began making "small tweaks" to Moore-related pages last year and then "started putting a meaningful amount of work" into them in February.  "I was attracted to articles related to Kevin first and foremost because I love his music," Thomas told The Mooreatorium.  "On a more practical level, there are also enough interviews and album reviews to allow for decent-sized articles."
